|---|---|---|
| to be bored to tears | 無聊到極點 | At first I was bored to tears. |
| to switch off | 不再專心 | I could feel myself starting to switch off. |
| to go on and on | 說了很久都不停 | He went on and on about old radios. |
| to be polite enough to listen | 以專心聆聽來表現良好的禮貌 | I was polite enough to listen to the end. |
| out of respect | 因為你重視或欽佩某個人 | I stayed out of respect for his age. |
| to nod along | 點頭表示你跟得上或同意 | I just nodded along and smiled. |
| to hold someone’s attention | 讓某人保持興趣 | His enthusiasm held my attention more than the topic. |
| to be lost in thought | 沉浸在思緒中,什麼都沒注意到 | He was lost in thought as he remembered the past. |
| to be touched | 因為別人的善意而心裡一暖 | I was touched that he wanted to share it with me. |
| not my cup of tea | 不是你喜歡的事物 | Technical repairs are not really my cup of tea. |

Band 6
I would like to describe a time when my neighbour talked about something I was not interested in. His name is Mr Farooq, he is an old man who live主詞動詞不一致:應為「lives」 alone in the house next to ours in Lahore. Last winter my mother ask時態錯誤:應為「asked」 me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me inside for tea. It was a cold evening and his room was small but warm. Then he started to talk about repairing old radios. He showed me many small parts on his table and explained how every one works, you know當作停頓使用的填充詞, for almost an hour. He told me that his father teach時態錯誤:應為「taught」 him the job when he was twelve, and that he still keeps the first radio he ever repaired on a shelf. Honestly, technical things are not interesting for me, and I was, er自然的停頓,填充詞不顯眼, very bored and I wanted to go home. But I keep時態錯誤:應為「kept」 listening because he lives alone and I think nobody visits him often. Also I remembered that my grandfather died last year, and I wished I could listen to his stories again. He looked so happy基本形容詞;用「animated」或「delighted」會得到更高的分數 when he was talking that I did not want to make him sad基本說法;用「disappoint him」會得到更高的分數. I nodded and asked some questions, and in the end I understand時態錯誤:應為「understood」 a little about the radios too. I felt tired but also happy, and when I left he said that I was a very good boy基本又略顯孩子氣的說法,限制了Lexical Resource的分數.
Band 7
I’d like to describe a time when my neighbour talked about something I wasn’t interested in. His name is Mr Farooq, and he’s an elderly man who lives alone in the house next to ours in Lahore. Last winter my mother asked me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me inside for tea. It was a cold evening, and his small room was warm. Then he started to talk about repairing old radios. He showed me lots of small parts on his table and explained how each one works, for almost an hour. He told me that his father had taught him the job when he was twelve, and that he still keeps the first radio he ever repaired on a shelf. Honestly, technical things have never interested me, and I was bored to tears慣用說法,用法準確 and wanted to go home. But I kept listening because he lives alone and I don’t think anybody visits him often. I also remembered that my own grandfather died last year, and I’d have given a lot to hear his stories again. He looked so animated精準的形容詞選擇 when he was talking that I didn’t wanted動詞形式錯誤:應為「didn’t want」 to disappoint him. I nodded and asked a few questions, and in the end I understood a little about the radios too正確使用過去簡單式為故事收尾. I felt tired but also strangely touched自然的複雜感受,增添深度, and when I left he said I was a good listener.
Band 8
I’d like to describe a time when my neighbour talked about something I wasn’t interested in. His name is Mr Farooq, an elderly man who lives alone in the house next to ours in Lahore. Last winter my mother asked me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me in for tea. It was a cold evening, and his small room smelled of tea and old wood. Then he started on the subject of repairing old radios. He laid out lots of small parts on his table and explained how each one works, for almost an hour. He mentioned that his father had taught him the trade at twelve, and that the first radio he ever repaired still sits on a shelf above his table. Honestly, technical things have never interested me, and I was bored to tears慣用說法,用法準確 and longing to go home. But I kept listening because he lives alone and I doubt many people visit him. I also thought of my own grandfather, who died last year, and how much I’d give to hear one of his stories again. He looked so animated精準的形容詞選擇 while he talked that I couldn’t bring myself to disappoint him. I nodded along, asked a few questions, and by the end I had actually understood a little about the radios自然使用過去完成式,表現出意料之外的結果. I felt tired but also strangely touched自然的複雜感受,增添深度, and as I left he told me I was a good listener, which meant more to me than I had expected帶反思的收尾子句,把稱讚和感受連起來.
- Band 6的時態失誤(「who live」、「my mother ask」、「I keep listening」)在Band 7已經正確(「who lives」、「my mother asked」、「I kept listening」),Band 8也維持乾淨。
- Band 6依賴「very bored」和「very good boy」;Band 7升級成「bored to tears」;Band 8再加上「couldn’t bring myself to disappoint him」,說明留下來的理由和個性有關,而不只是出於禮貌。
- Band 6以一句稱讚收尾(「a very good boy」);Band 7轉述「I was a good listener」;Band 8以一段反思作結:「which meant more to me than I had expected」。
- Why do some people find it hard to listen without interrupting?
- Is it ever polite to tell someone that you are not interested in what they are saying?
- Do you think older people need someone to listen to them more than younger people do?
- What makes a person a good listener, in your opinion?
- Has technology made people worse at listening to each other?
