| to be bored to tears | 지루해서 견딜 수 없을 만큼 매우 지루하다 | At first I was bored to tears. |

| out of respect | 어떤 사람을 소중히 여기거나 존경하기 때문에 | I stayed out of respect for his age. |
| to nod along | 이해하거나 동의한다는 뜻으로 고개를 끄덕이다 | I just nodded along and smiled. |
| to hold someone’s attention | 누군가가 계속 관심을 갖게 하다 | His enthusiasm held my attention more than the topic. |
| to be lost in thought | 생각에 깊이 빠져 다른 것을 알아차리지 못하다 | He was lost in thought as he remembered the past. |
| to be touched | 누군가의 친절 때문에 잔잔한 감동을 느끼다 | I was touched that he wanted to share it with me. |
| not my cup of tea | 자신이 즐기는 종류가 아닌 | Technical repairs are not really my cup of tea. |

Band 8
I’d like to describe a time when my neighbour talked about something I wasn’t interested in. His name is Mr Farooq, an elderly man who lives alone in the house next to ours in Lahore. Last winter my mother asked me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me in for tea. It was a cold evening, and his small room smelled of tea and old wood. Then he started on the subject of repairing old radios. He laid out lots of small parts on his table and explained how each one works, for almost an hour. He mentioned that his father had taught him the trade at twelve, and that the first radio he ever repaired still sits on a shelf above his table. Honestly, technical things have never interested me, and I was bored to tears관용 표현을 정확하게 사용 and longing to go home. But I kept listening because he lives alone and I doubt many people visit him.
- “I was polite”
- Why do some people find it hard to listen without interrupting?
- Is it ever polite to tell someone that you are not interested in what they are saying?
- Do you think older people need someone to listen to them more than younger people do?
