Last winter my mother asked me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me inside for tea. It was a cold evening, and his small room was warm. He told me that his father had taught him the job when he was twelve, and that he still keeps the first radio he ever repaired on a shelf. Honestly, technical things have never interested me, and I was bored to tearsสำนวนที่ใช้ได้ถูกต้อง and wanted to go home. Band 8

I’d like to describe a time when my neighbour talked about something I wasn’t interested in. His name is Mr Farooq, an elderly man who lives alone in the house next to ours in Lahore. Last winter my mother asked me to return a dish to him, and when I arrived he invited me in for tea. It was a cold evening, and his small room smelled of tea and old wood. Then he started on the subject of repairing old radios. He laid out lots of small parts on his table and explained how each one works, for almost an hour. He mentioned that his father had taught him the trade at twelve, and that the first radio he ever repaired still sits on a shelf above his table. Honestly, technical things have never interested me, and I was bored to tearsสำนวนที่ใช้ได้ถูกต้อง and longing to go home. But I kept listening because he lives alone and I doubt many people visit him. I also thought of my own grandfather, who died last year, and how much I’d give to hear one of his stories again.

Band 6 (“who live”, “my mother ask”, “I keep listening”) Band 7 (“who lives”, “my mother asked”, “I kept listening”)
  • คำตอบระดับ Band 6 ใช้ “very bored” และ “very good boy” เป็นหลัก คำตอบระดับ Band 7 ยกระดับเป็น “bored to tears” ส่วนคำตอบระดับ Band 8 เพิ่ม “couldn’t bring myself to disappoint him” เพื่อแสดงเหตุผลที่อยู่ฟังซึ่งเกี่ยวกับอุปนิสัย ไม่ใช่แค่มารยาท
  • คำตอบระดับ Band 6 ปิดท้ายด้วยคำชม (“a very good boy”) คำตอบระดับ Band 7 เล่าว่า “I was a good listener” ส่วนคำตอบระดับ Band 8 ปิดด้วยข้อสะท้อนคิดว่า “which meant more to me than I had expected”

  • ใช้ present tense กับ past tense ปนกันกลางเรื่อง โดยเฉพาะหลังคำว่า “then” และ “but”

  1. Why do some people find it hard to listen without interrupting?
  2. Is it ever polite to tell someone that you are not interested in what they are saying?
  3. Do you think older people need someone to listen to them more than younger people do?
