- who, what: email to a music school in Santiago, guitar lessons
- waiting: January, three weeks, no reply, checked the phone daily
- next step: website form, social media message, reply in two days
- feeling: annoyed, then relieved and a bit silly, spam folder
Band 6
I would like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and did not get a reply for a long time. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I wanted to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons. My friend Camila told me the teachers there were good, so I was excited. I writeError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “wrote” about my age, my level and the days when I could go there. After one week nobody answered, and I thought they did not want a new student. I waited for three weekError de plural: debería ser “three weeks”, and every morning I checked my phone, you knowMuletilla usada como marcador de vacilación, but there was nothing. I was very disappointedIntensificador y adjetivo básicos; limitan el Lexical Resource and a little angry. I did not want to look for another school because this one was near my house. Then I used the school’s website and wrote a short message in the contact form, and I also sent a message on their social media page. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, answerError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “answered” me. He said sorry and told me that my first email was in his spam folder, so he did not see it. I felt very relievedIntensificador y adjetivo básicos; limitan el Lexical Resource, and also, erVacilación natural, muletilla leve, a little silly because I thought bad things about the school. Now I have lessons every Tuesday after work, and I am practising a song for my mother’s birthday. It teach meError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “It taught me” that if nobody answers, I must send a message in another way.
Band 7
I’d like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January that went unanswered for weeks. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I wanted to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons. My friend Camila had told me the teachers there were excellent, so I was really looking forward to it. I explained my age, my level and the days when I could travel there. After a week there was still nothing, and I started to think that they weren’t interested in taking on a beginnerPasado correcto en un pensamiento referido. I waited three weeks, checking my phone every morning, and honestly, I’d almost given upMarcador discursivo natural que expresa frustración. I felt let downExpresión con phrasal verb en lugar de un adjetivo básico and a bit annoyed, but I didn’t want to try another school, because this one was close to my home. Eventually I tried the contact form on their website and sent a message on their social media page as well. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, replied. He apologised and explained that my first email had landed in his spam folderColocación natural, which he only noticed by chance. I was hugely relieved, though also a little embarrassingError en la forma del adjetivo: debería ser “embarrassed” because I’d imagined the worst. I now have lessons every Tuesday, I’m even practising a song for my mother’s birthday, and I’ve learned to follow upPhrasal verb preciso para volver a contactar a alguien in a different way instead of to waitError en la forma del verbo: debería ser “waiting” and assuming the worst.
Band 8
I’d like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and then heard nothing back about for weeks. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I’d decided to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons, explaining my age, my level and the days when I could travel there. A friend, Camila, had told me the teachers there were excellent, so I was looking forward to it. After a week there was still no answer, and I began to suspect that they couldn’t be bothered with a beginnerExpresión idiomática con un modal correcto en un pensamiento referido. I waited three weeks, checking my phone every morning, and to be perfectly honest, I’d all but given upMarcador discursivo natural con una expresión fija. I felt quietly let downAdverbio y adjetivo con phrasal verb precisos, though I didn’t fancy starting again with another school, since this one was close to home. In the end I tried the contact form on their website and messaged their social media page as well. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, replied. He apologised and explained that my first email had ended up in his spam folderColocación natural, which he only discovered by chance. I was enormously relieved, if a little sheepish, because I’d jumped to conclusionsExpresión idiomática precisa para juzgar demasiado rápido about the school. I now have lessons every Tuesday, I’m even rehearsing a song for my mother’s birthday, and the experience taught me to chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worstEstructura contrastiva que lleva la reflexión.
Qué hizo subir la banda
- Los deslices de Band 6 (“I write about my age”, “Mr Rojas, answer me”) pasan a formas correctas de pasado en Band 7 (“I wrote”, “replied”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
- Band 6 se apoya en “very disappointed” y “very relieved”; Band 7 usa “let down” y “landed in his spam folder”; Band 8 añade “quietly let down” y “jumped to conclusions”.
- Band 6 cierra con “if nobody answers, I must send a message in another way”; Band 8 cierra con una reflexión sobre la lección aprendida, “chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worst”.
- Responder la línea final, “how you felt about the experience”, con una sola palabra como “bad”.
- Why do some people take a very long time to reply to messages?¿Por qué algunas personas tardan muchísimo en responder los mensajes?
- Is it rude to ignore a message, or has communication simply become too fast?¿Es de mala educación ignorar un mensaje, o la comunicación simplemente se ha vuelto demasiado rápida?
- Do you prefer writing a message to speaking on the phone, and why?¿Prefieres escribir un mensaje o hablar por teléfono, y por qué?
- Should companies be expected to answer customers' messages within a fixed time?¿Se debería esperar que las empresas respondan a los mensajes de sus clientes en un plazo fijo?
- How has instant messaging changed the way families and friends stay in touch?¿Cómo ha cambiado la mensajería instantánea la forma en que las familias y los amigos se mantienen en contacto?
Preguntas frecuentes
Si no hubo respuesta, di qué hiciste después y cómo te sentiste.
