這些片語比「I waited」或「he did not answer」更精準地描述等待回覆的情況。
|---|---|---|
| to hear back from someone | 收到某人的回覆 | I still hadn’t heard back from them after a week. |
| to follow up | 針對先前的訊息再次聯絡對方 | I decided to follow up with a shorter message. |
| to be left hanging | 一直被晾著,沒有得到任何答覆 | It is frustrating to be left hanging for so long. |
| to be left on read | 訊息已讀卻沒有回覆 | I felt left on read, which was a little hurtful. |
| a spam folder | 垃圾郵件會被自動送到的地方 | My email had landed in his spam folder. |
| to give up on something | 覺得沒用而不再嘗試 | I had almost given up on the whole idea. |
| to drag on | 拖得比必要的時間還長 | The waiting dragged on for three weeks. |
| a polite reminder | 客氣地再問一次的訊息 | I sent a polite reminder through their website. |
| out of the blue | 出乎意料地 | Then, out of the blue, a reply arrived. |
| to jump to conclusions | 太快下結論 | I had jumped to conclusions about the school. |
- who, what: email to a music school in Santiago, guitar lessons
- waiting: January, three weeks, no reply, checked the phone daily
- next step: website form, social media message, reply in two days
- feeling: annoyed, then relieved and a bit silly, spam folder
Band 6
I would like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and did not get a reply for a long time. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I wanted to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons. My friend Camila told me the teachers there were good, so I was excited. I write時態錯誤:應為「wrote」 about my age, my level and the days when I could go there. After one week nobody answered, and I thought they did not want a new student. I waited for three week漏掉複數:應為「three weeks」, and every morning I checked my phone, you know當作停頓使用的填充詞, but there was nothing. I was very disappointed基本強調詞和形容詞,限制了Lexical Resource的分數 and a little angry. I did not want to look for another school because this one was near my house. Then I used the school’s website and wrote a short message in the contact form, and I also sent a message on their social media page. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, answer時態錯誤:應為「answered」 me. He said sorry and told me that my first email was in his spam folder, so he did not see it. I felt very relieved基本強調詞和形容詞,限制了Lexical Resource的分數, and also, er自然的停頓,填充詞不顯眼, a little silly because I thought bad things about the school. Now I have lessons every Tuesday after work, and I am practising a song for my mother’s birthday. It teach me時態錯誤:應為「It taught me」 that if nobody answers, I must send a message in another way.
Band 7
I’d like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January that went unanswered for weeks. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I wanted to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons. My friend Camila had told me the teachers there were excellent, so I was really looking forward to it. I explained my age, my level and the days when I could travel there. After a week there was still nothing, and I started to think that they weren’t interested in taking on a beginner在轉述的想法中準確使用過去式. I waited three weeks, checking my phone every morning, and honestly, I’d almost given up自然的話語標記,表達挫折感. I felt let down用片語表達,取代基本形容詞 and a bit annoyed, but I didn’t want to try another school, because this one was close to my home. Eventually I tried the contact form on their website and sent a message on their social media page as well. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, replied. He apologised and explained that my first email had landed in his spam folder自然的詞語搭配, which he only noticed by chance. I was hugely relieved, though also a little embarrassing詞形錯誤:應為「embarrassed」 because I’d imagined the worst. I now have lessons every Tuesday, I’m even practising a song for my mother’s birthday, and I’ve learned to follow up精準的片語動詞,表示再次聯絡對方 in a different way instead of to wait動詞形式錯誤:應為「waiting」 and assuming the worst.
Band 8
I’d like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and then heard nothing back about for weeks. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I’d decided to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons, explaining my age, my level and the days when I could travel there. A friend, Camila, had told me the teachers there were excellent, so I was looking forward to it. After a week there was still no answer, and I began to suspect that they couldn’t be bothered with a beginner慣用語搭配準確的情態動詞,用在轉述的想法中. I waited three weeks, checking my phone every morning, and to be perfectly honest, I’d all but given up自然的話語標記,搭配固定說法. I felt quietly let down精準的副詞和片語形容詞, though I didn’t fancy starting again with another school, since this one was close to home. In the end I tried the contact form on their website and messaged their social media page as well. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, replied. He apologised and explained that my first email had ended up in his spam folder自然的詞語搭配, which he only discovered by chance. I was enormously relieved, if a little sheepish, because I’d jumped to conclusions精準的慣用語,表示太快下判斷 about the school. I now have lessons every Tuesday, I’m even rehearsing a song for my mother’s birthday, and the experience taught me to chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worst用對比結構帶出反思.
- Band 6的錯誤(「I write about my age」、「Mr Rojas, answer me」)在Band 7已經改成正確的過去式(「I wrote」、「replied」),Band 8也維持乾淨。
- Band 6用的是「very disappointed」和「very relieved」;Band 7改用「let down」和「landed in his spam folder」;Band 8再加上「quietly let down」和「jumped to conclusions」。
- Band 6以「if nobody answers, I must send a message in another way」收尾;Band 8則以對這個教訓的反思作結:「chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worst」。
- 忘了第三個要點「whether you finally received a reply」,結果話說完了卻沒有交代結果。
- 只用「bad」這類一個詞來回答最後一行「how you felt about the experience」。
- Why do some people take a very long time to reply to messages?
- Is it rude to ignore a message, or has communication simply become too fast?
- Do you prefer writing a message to speaking on the phone, and why?
- Should companies be expected to answer customers' messages within a fixed time?
- How has instant messaging changed the way families and friends stay in touch?
