시험관은 사건의 분명한 순서, “after a week”와 “in the end” 같은 시간 표현, 그리고 “bad”나 “good” 대신 감정을 나타내는 구체적인 단어를 듣습니다.
이 표현들은 “I waited”나 “he did not answer”보다 답을 기다리는 상황을 더 정확하게 묘사합니다.
|---|---|---|
| to hear back from someone | 누군가에게서 답을 받다 | I still hadn’t heard back from them after a week. |
| to follow up | 앞서 보낸 메시지에 관해 다시 연락하다 | I decided to follow up with a shorter message. |
| to be left hanging | 아무 답도 받지 못한 채 계속 기다리게 되다 | It is frustrating to be left hanging for so long. |
| to be left on read | 메시지를 상대가 읽었는데도 답을 받지 못하다 | I felt left on read, which was a little hurtful. |
| a spam folder | 원치 않는 이메일이 자동으로 들어가는 곳 | My email had landed in his spam folder. |
| to give up on something | 소용없어 보여서 시도를 그만두다 | I had almost given up on the whole idea. |
| to drag on | 필요 이상으로 길게 이어지다 | The waiting dragged on for three weeks. |
| a polite reminder | 다시 한 번 부드럽게 묻는 메시지 | I sent a polite reminder through their website. |
| out of the blue | 예상치 못하게 | Then, out of the blue, a reply arrived. |
| to jump to conclusions | 너무 성급하게 판단하다 | I had jumped to conclusions about the school. |

I would like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and did not get a reply for a long time. I’d like to talk about an email I sent to a music school last January and then heard nothing back about for weeks. I live in Valparaíso, in Chile, and I’d decided to learn the guitar, so I wrote to a small school in Santiago to ask about evening lessons, explaining my age, my level and the days when I could travel there. A friend, Camila, had told me the teachers there were excellent, so I was looking forward to it. After a week there was still no answer, and I began to suspect that they couldn’t be bothered with a beginner떠올린 생각에서 알맞은 조동사를 쓴 관용적인 표현. I waited three weeks, checking my phone every morning, and to be perfectly honest, I’d all but given up관용 표현이 들어간 자연스러운 담화 표지. I felt quietly let down정확한 부사와 구동사형 형용사, though I didn’t fancy starting again with another school, since this one was close to home. In the end I tried the contact form on their website and messaged their social media page as well. Two days later the teacher, Mr Rojas, replied. He apologised and explained that my first email had ended up in his spam folder자연스러운 콜로케이션, which he only discovered by chance. I was enormously relieved, if a little sheepish, because I’d jumped to conclusions너무 성급하게 판단했음을 나타내는 정확한 관용구 about the school. I now have lessons every Tuesday, I’m even rehearsing a song for my mother’s birthday, and the experience taught me to chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worst성찰을 담은 대조 구조.
- 6점 답변의 실수(“I write about my age”, “Mr Rojas, answer me”)는 7점 답변에서 정확한 과거형(“I wrote”, “replied”)으로 바뀌고 8점 답변에서도 정확하게 유지됩니다.
- 6점 답변은 “very disappointed”와 “very relieved”에 의존하고, 7점 답변은 “let down”과 “landed in his spam folder”를 쓰며, 8점 답변은 “quietly let down”과 “jumped to conclusions”를 더합니다.
- 6점 답변은 “if nobody answers, I must send a message in another way”로 마무리하고, 8점 답변은 교훈에 대한 성찰, 즉 “chase things up through another channel rather than sit and assume the worst”로 마무리합니다.
- 세 번째 항목 “whether you finally received a reply”를 잊고 결과 없이 말을 끝내는 것
- 마지막 줄 “how you felt about the experience”에 “bad” 같은 한 단어로만 답하는 것
- Why do some people take a very long time to reply to messages?
- Is it rude to ignore a message, or has communication simply become too fast?
- Do you prefer writing a message to speaking on the phone, and why?
- Should companies be expected to answer customers' messages within a fixed time?
- How has instant messaging changed the way families and friends stay in touch?
