Band 7
I’d like to talk about an interesting video I watched last month. It was a short documentary, about twelve minutes long, on the stilt fishermen of the south coast of Sri Lanka, near Galle. I watched it on my laptop at home in Colombo on a rainy Sunday afternoon. My cousin Shehan had sent me the link because he knew I’m always curious about our local culture. I decided to watch it because I’d seen those men on postcards and photos many times, but I’d never understood how they actually live. In the video, a man called Sunil explains that he sits on a wooden pole in the sea for hours, waiting for small fish, and that his father and grandfather did exactly the same. The camera also followed him as he climbed onto the pole before dawn and balanced there with one hand, which looked almost impossible to me. The footage of the sunrise over the water was breathtakingDescripción precisa y natural de las imágenes, and I didn’t touchedError de forma verbal: debería ser “didn’t touch” my phone once. Sunil also says that fewer young men want to learn this work because it’s difficult and uncertain. As for how I feel, I’m proud of it as part of our heritage, but at the same time a little sadEl marcador de contraste mantiene el sentimiento equilibrado, because it may disappear. Afterwards I showed it to my parents and we talked about it all evening. It has honestly changed the way I look atExpresión natural que muestra un cambio de opinión the fishermen in the coastError de preposición: debería ser “on the coast”.

Sunil also says that fewer young men want to learn this work because it’s difficult and uncertain. As for how I feel, I’m proud of it as part of our heritage, yet I can’t help feeling a little sad that it may disappear“yet” concesivo y “can’t help” usados con precisión. Afterwards I showed it to my parents and we talked about it all evening. Qué hizo subir la banda
- Los deslices de tiempo verbal de Band 6 (“video that I see”, “Shehan send me”, “his father and grandfather do the same”) son correctos en Band 7 (“I watched”, “had sent”, “did exactly the same”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
- Band 6 se apoya en “very beautiful” y “a nice tradition”; Band 7 usa “The footage of the sunrise over the water was breathtaking”; Band 8 añade “was glued to the screen” y “left a lasting impression on me”.
- Band 6 termina con una afirmación sencilla (“now I look at fishermen in a different way”); Band 7 cuenta un cambio (“changed the way I look at”); Band 8 cierra con “far more respect”.
- Nombrar el video y el canal pero no responder nunca a “how you feel about it”.
- Decir “it was interesting” o “it was nice” sin un solo dato, escena o persona que muestre qué era interesante.
- How have videos changed the way people share news and local stories?¿Cómo han cambiado los videos la manera en que la gente comparte noticias e historias locales?
- Should children be limited in the amount of video they watch?¿Debería limitarse la cantidad de video que ven los niños?
Preguntas frecuentes
