The IELTS Speaking test is the face-to-face part of IELTS: eleven to fourteen minutes with a certified examiner, recorded, and marked against four criteria — Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. It runs in three parts. Part 1 is a short warm-up: the examiner asks about familiar topics like your home, your work or studies, and your daily routine, for four to five minutes. Part 2 is the cue card: you get one minute to prepare notes on a topic, then speak for one to two minutes without interruption. Part 3 turns the same topic abstract — the examiner asks follow-up questions that expect reasoning, comparison and opinion rather than personal description, for four to five minutes. Your band for Speaking is reported separately from Listening, Reading and Writing, then averaged with them for your Overall Band Score. How is the overall IELTS score calculated?
Your overall band is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 rounding up to a half and .75 to a whole band.
How many bands does IELTS have?
IELTS uses a nine-band scale from band 1 up to band 9, plus band 0. Scores are reported in whole and half bands, and there is no pass or fail.

Are IELTS Speaking examiners native speakers?
Native-speaker status is not an IELTS examiner requirement. The published criteria are a degree, a recognised English teaching qualification and teaching experience.

You can ask the IELTS examiner to repeat a question and you do not lose marks for it. What the examiner is able to do differs between Part 1 and Part 3.

Can I retake IELTS Speaking only?
You can retake IELTS Speaking on its own through One Skill Retake, but only after a full IELTS on computer test at a participating centre and within 60 days.
Can you get your IELTS Speaking score re-marked?
Yes. An Enquiry on Results is a re-mark by senior IELTS examiners, applied for within six weeks of your test date, and it can cover Speaking on its own.
Do universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
Acceptance of IELTS One Skill Retake is each organisation's own decision, so IELTS tells you to check with the university directly before you book the retake.
How many times can you retake IELTS?
There is no published limit on how many full IELTS tests you can sit, and no mandatory waiting period. One Skill Retake is capped at once per full test.

There is no separate Speaking result. All four bands are released together: 1 to 5 days for IELTS on computer, 6 to 8 for IELTS Online, up to 13 on paper.
