Is IELTS One Skill Retake free?

No official IELTS page describes One Skill Retake as something you get for nothing. It is booked on its own and paid for on its own. The expectation that it should be included is common enough to be worth unpicking, because it usually turns out to be a different service people are thinking of.

Why people expect it to be free

Three things feed the idea. The first is the word “retake” itself, which in school and university exams often means a second attempt at a paper you failed. IELTS has no pass mark and no failure, so there is nothing for a provider to compensate you for — a band you did not want is still a valid result.

The second is that you already sat and paid for a test that included the skill in question. But the retake is not a correction of that test. It is a new sitting on a new day, delivered and marked in the ordinary way, which is exactly why it produces a new Test Report Form rather than an amendment to your old one.

The third is a genuine mix-up with the re-mark.

The route where money can come back

If you believe your band was misjudged rather than genuinely earned, the matching service is an Enquiry on Results. IDP’s side-by-side comparison of the two routes says that a re-mark fee is refunded in full if your result is changed to a higher band score, and that a One Skill Retake carries no refund if your score changes, though it does produce a new Test Report Form. So the conditional money-back offer some candidates half-remember attaches to the re-mark, not to the retake.

Those two services also answer different questions. A re-mark asks whether the performance you already gave was read correctly. A retake asks you to give a better one.

What the “no fee” wording on official pages covers

IDP’s page does say that certain fees do not apply, and that sentence is worth reading precisely: there is no separate registration fee and no separate payment processing fee, and the amount is identical whichever of the four skills you retake. That is a statement about the absence of add-ons, not about the absence of a charge.

What to settle before any of this matters

Eligibility is decided earlier than the fee is. Your full test has to have been an IELTS on computer test at a centre that offers the service, and the retake has to happen within 60 days of it — the conditions set out in what One Skill Retake is, how you book it and whether Speaking can be retaken alone. Ask your centre about the service before you book the full test, because no fee you are willing to pay afterwards makes an ineligible test eligible.
