Writing Task 1 practice

Describe a chart in 20 minutes, then see what you missed

Pick one of three charts, write at least 150 words, and the browser checks your length, your overview, your figures against the data, the key features and your comparisons. Nothing you write leaves your browser.

Three charts, one report

Choose a chart, then write the report

IELTS.org's test format page says that in Academic Writing Task 1 you are given a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to “describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words”. The same page says to write at least 150 words, suggests about 20 minutes, does not accept notes or bullet points, and counts Task 2 twice as much as Task 1 towards the Writing score.

  • Three charts written for this site: a line graph, a bar chart and a table. Their figures are invented, so none of them is a real statistic.
  • What the browser checks: your length, your paragraphs, whether an overview was found, the key features of the chart, every figure you used against the data, and your comparisons.
  • A model answer follows your result. It was written for this site as one possible answer, not an official one.
  • A structure and data check, not a band score, because the browser cannot read what your sentences mean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What the tool checks, what it leaves out and how many words to write.

Is this a real IELTS Writing Task 1?

No. The three charts, their figures and the model answers were created for this site. They follow the format IELTS.org describes for Academic Task 1, a graph, chart or table to describe in at least 150 words, but none of them comes from an IELTS paper and the figures are not real statistics, so treat the result as practice.

Why does the tool show no band score?

The browser can count words, match your figures to the chart and look for an overview, but it cannot read what your sentences mean. IELTS.org says Writing is assessed on Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and those need an examiner, so what you get is a structure and data check. The Writing band descriptors show what each band looks like on the four criteria.

How many words should a Task 1 report have?

IELTS.org says to write at least 150 words, and an answer under 150 words is penalised. IELTS.org does not publish a maximum; it suggests about 20 minutes for Task 1 because Task 2 counts twice as much towards the Writing score. IELTS Writing word count: 150 and 250 words explains both limits.

What is a good overview in Task 1?

An overview states the main trend or the biggest contrast in the chart without figures, for example which line rises, which falls and which is highest. The task line asks you to select and report the main features, and the overview is where that selection first shows. IELTS Writing Task 1: charts, graphs and tables shows how to write one.
