Can you do IELTS online at home?

“At home” is doing quite a lot of work in this question. There is a remote IELTS, it is called IELTS Online, and it is a genuine, examiner-marked test — but it is a specific product with specific limits rather than a home version of whatever you were already planning to book.

What IELTS Online is, and is not

It is the Academic test, taken from home or another suitable private location with a stable internet connection, with the Speaking test conducted by video call with an IELTS examiner. Results are published in six to eight days, and you receive an electronic Test Report Form rather than a paper one.

It is not General Training. It is not a route for immigration or professional registration. And it is not universally available — IELTS Online is expanding country by country, so the answer for your country today may not be the answer six months ago or six months from now.

There is also an age condition: it is currently available to test takers aged 18 and above.

The room and the equipment

The requirements are more specific than most candidates expect, and they are the most common reason a plan falls apart late.

You need a private, well-lit space where you will not be interrupted. You need a laptop or desktop computer with one screen only — multiple screens are not allowed — running Windows or macOS, with a webcam, a microphone and speakers. A tablet or a phone is not a substitute.

Read that list against the room you actually intend to use, not the room you imagine. A shared flat with someone arriving home mid-test, or a desk with a second monitor you would have to physically unplug, is a problem to solve in advance rather than on the morning.

Where the Speaking test fits

The Speaking test is a video call with a real examiner, so the same three parts and the same interaction apply. What changes is that you are responsible for the conditions: your connection, your microphone, your quiet room, your lighting.

That is worth a dry run. Sit where you will sit, at the time of day you will sit, and speak for fourteen minutes. You will find out whether the neighbours, the light or your own volume are going to be a problem while there is still time to change something.

Before you book

Two checks, in this order. First, confirm IELTS Online is available where you are. Second, confirm the organisation you are applying to accepts it — the official advice is to check with your chosen institution directly before booking, because acceptance is not automatic.

If either check comes back no, the test-centre formats are still open to you and nothing about your preparation is wasted.
