The IELTS partners recommend that an IELTS result demonstrates a test taker’s English language ability for a maximum period of two years, based on the well-documented phenomenon of second language loss, or attrition.
The same guidance recommends that a Test Report Form more than two years old should only be accepted if it comes with proof that the test taker has actively maintained, or tried to improve, their English.
It is a recommendation, and organisations decide
Two years is what IELTS recommends. It is not a rule that IELTS enforces on organisations. IELTS.org tells test takers to check with the organisation directly about how long it will accept a result, and IDP says that specific organisations may accept older scores or have different eligibility requirements. Some are stricter and some are more flexible.
That is why the answer for your application is on the organisation’s page, not on IELTS’s. Verification is a separate period
IELTS lets organisations verify that a Test Report Form is genuine through the IELTS Results Service, and IELTS.org says it cannot further investigate forms that are more than three years old. Verification is about authenticity. It does not make an old result valid for admission or a visa.
What to do
Note your test date on the day you get your result and work out your two-year point. If your application is close to it, ask the organisation before you rely on the result. If you may need a new test, remember that booking, sitting and receiving a result all take time.
