Do universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

This is the question to settle first, before eligibility and before preparation, because a retake that your target organisation will not read is wasted effort no matter how well it goes.

Why there is no single yes or no

IELTS sets the test; organisations set their own entry requirements. That split is why both the test-taker page and the organisations page carry the same instruction rather than a list: check with the organisation directly to see if they accept IELTS One Skill Retake before booking your test. A university is entitled to require a single full test, and some do.

What the official pages actually name

IELTS.org’s page for receiving organisations is specific about governments: the governments of Australia and New Zealand accept One Skill Retake results for visa and migration purposes, and the UK government accepts it for entry into the UK. Beyond that it speaks in categories rather than names — professional and regulatory associations, and some of the top global universities and other education institutions.

That is as far as the official wording goes, and it is worth noticing what it does not do: it does not publish a searchable list of accepting universities. Any list you find elsewhere is somebody’s summary, and summaries go stale. The admissions page of the institution you are applying to, or a reply from its admissions office, is the only source that binds anyone.

An organisation can see exactly what it is getting

Acceptance decisions are made with full information. The Test Report Form issued after a retake states the test type as IELTS One Skill Retake and marks the retaken skill with the word “retake”, showing it next to the three bands carried over from the original test, and registered organisations can verify any result through the IELTS Results Service.

So an institution that accepts it is accepting something it can identify, and an institution that declines is declining knowingly. Neither outcome is a grey area you can talk your way through after the fact.

How to ask, and when

Ask before you book the retake, and ask in writing. One clear question — does your requirement accept an IELTS Test Report Form issued for One Skill Retake? — is enough, and a reply you can keep is worth more than a phone call you half remember.

If the answer is no, the decision shifts to a full resit or a re-mark, and the same principle applies: find out which the organisation accepts before you choose.
