IELTS Mentor AI alternatives: who should pick something else (2026)

Quick answer

IELTS Mentor AI fits a candidate preparing for Academic IELTS alone on a phone who wants all four skills marked in one paid app, with a band for each criterion and the recurring errors named. Pick something else if you want an official score or official practice material (IELTS.org, IDP, the British Council), a person who answers back (a tutor on italki or Preply), a tool that runs in a browser (SmallTalk2Me, Writing9, Speechful), the General Training Reading paper, or pronunciation drilling alone (ELSA Speak). The facts here come from each product's own pages, read on 6 November 2026.

Every Speaking and Writing answer comes back marked on the four official criteria with a band for each, the sentences that moved it, and the errors that recur across your answers.

On this page

A candidate who searches for alternatives to IELTS Mentor AI usually has one of four reasons: they want something official, they want a person rather than software, they want a tool that runs in a browser, or they need one skill and not four. Each reason points to a different kind of product, and for each there is a product that is the better choice. This page lists them with one checkable fact from each product’s own pages.

We make IELTS Mentor AI. Every fact about another product below comes from that product’s own store listing or website, read on 6 November 2026, and is quoted or dated. Check each product’s current page before you decide.

Key takeaways

  • The official preparation materials from IELTS.org, IDP and the British Council are the first step for everyone: they are the test’s own material. They do not mark your Speaking or Writing.
  • A human tutor on italki, Preply or Cambly is the better choice when you need a person to answer back or hold you to a schedule.
  • SmallTalk2Me, Writing9, IELTS Writing Checker and Speechful run in a browser; IELTS Mentor AI does not.
  • ELSA Speak, Stimuler and IELTSpeaking are Speaking products; IELTS Test Pro and Speechful cover four skills. IELTS Mentor AI is a paid app for all four Academic skills with a band for each criterion, and it is not an official IELTS product.

Who IELTS Mentor AI is for, and who it is not for

IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills. An AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and gives a band for each criterion with the sentences that moved it; full Academic Reading and four-part Listening tests are marked the moment you finish; one Skill Map collects the errors from every test and puts the Skill to Fix First at the top. The interface is in English. It is not an official IELTS product and is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge.

It is not for you if you need the General Training Reading paper, which is not in the app; if you want an official score, which only a booked test gives; if you want a human examiner, tutor or teacher; or if you want to practise at a desk in a browser, because there is no web version. Each of those is a reason to choose one of the options below.

How this list was made

Every product here is one that candidates choose instead of ours: the three official partners’ materials, the tutor marketplaces, and the AI products that AI assistants name first when asked which IELTS app to use (our weekly check, below). We have not tested any of them against ours, and nothing here is a quality ranking. Where a page could not be read from our server, we say so rather than fill the gap.

The official preparation materials

IELTS.org. The test owners’ preparation page, read on 6 November 2026, says: “From apps and webinars to training courses and practice tests, IELTS official resources can help you prepare for your success.” It offers official sample tests, Writing preparation resources, webinars, videos and books. Choose it first, whatever else you use: it is the only material written by the people who write the test. It does not mark your own Speaking or Writing answers.

IDP. IDP’s preparation hub, read the same day, invites you to “Find practice tests, masterclasses, podcasts, videos, articles and more.” Its app, IELTS by IDP (App Store, Australian storefront, 6 November 2026, seller IDP Education Ltd), lets you “Take the English Self-Assessment to evaluate your current level” and “Book your IELTS test directly from the app with just a few taps.” Choose it when you want the format, the booking and the results in one official place. Its listing describes no AI marking of Speaking or Writing.

The British Council. Its preparation pages, including the IELTS Ready offering, refused our server’s requests on 6 November 2026, so no sentence is quoted; our record of 18 September 2026 described IELTS Ready as a web platform with practice tests and preparation courses. Read its current page yourself.

A human tutor

italki, Preply, Cambly. All three are marketplaces for live lessons with a person. italki’s English-teachers page listed “4227 English tutors available” on 6 November 2026, with “Test Preparation” as a category and teachers describing themselves as IELTS teachers; its App Store listing describes “private tutoring, thanks to qualified native teachers” and does not mention IELTS. Preply’s App Store listing says it “connects you with thousands of professional tutors for live, personalized classes” and sets itself against “gamified apps that rely only on repetitive exercises”; its IELTS tutor pages returned an error to our server, so we quote only the listing. Cambly’s listing describes learning “through real conversations with native speakers.”

A tutor is the better choice when you need questions answered, a correction explained in your own words, a schedule someone else keeps, or when your level is already high and the remaining problems are specific to you. What a tutor cannot do is be there at any hour for a ten-minute session, or mark a full Reading paper the moment you finish; most candidates who use one also practise between lessons. In our check of 19 October 2026, italki was named in 51 of 200 buying answers from three AI assistants, more than any product except ELSA Speak and Stimuler.

The AI apps and tools

ELSA Speak

A general pronunciation and speaking coach, not an IELTS product. Its US App Store listing on 6 November 2026 names the exam once, in a list: “Exam Preparation – Prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN, CEFR, and more with targeted practice to boost fluency.” It showed 114,508 ratings averaging 4.75. Choose it instead when Pronunciation is your lowest criterion and you want sound-by-sound drilling; its listing does not describe the four Speaking criteria, a band per criterion or a Parts 1 to 3 mock. Side by side.

SmallTalk2Me

A browser product. Its IELTS page on 6 November 2026: “SmallTalk2Me runs right in your browser. No downloads or setup required,” on “both mobile devices and desktop computers.” It covers Speaking Parts 1 to 3 and returns one number: “Receive your immediate predicted IELTS Band Score (1-9).” A separate Writing simulator is linked. Choose it instead when you practise at a desk and want nothing installed, or when one predicted band after each simulation is what you want. We found no Reading feature and no store listing. Side by side.

Stimuler

An AI speaking app on both stores. Its US App Store listing on 6 November 2026 promises “Industry-first Live Video Mock Tests that mirror the real IELTS experience” and a 60-second loop with “instant feedback on your pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and more in less than 20 seconds.” It showed 8,686 ratings averaging 4.81. Its website’s title the same day reads “IELTS Prep App - Speaking, Writing & Reading Practice”; Listening is not named. Choose it instead when you want very short speaking drills with a score in seconds and a video mock. Side by side.

Speaking-only apps: IELTSpeaking and Cathoven

IELTSpeaking’s US App Store listing (6 November 2026) describes “full IELTS Speaking mock tests, 1-on-1 AI examiner feedback” and a report that “evaluates grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation”; 1,204 ratings averaging 4.64. Cathoven’s IELTS app named the four official criteria and was Android-only on 18 September 2026. Choose either when Speaking is the only skill you need.

Writing checkers in the browser: Writing9 and IELTS Writing Checker

Both are web-only. Writing9 (6 November 2026): “You can check letters from Task 1 General, charts from Task 1 Academic and essays from Task 2 General/Academic.” IELTS Writing Checker the same day: “We evaluate your writing across all four official IELTS criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.” Choose one when Writing is your only problem and you write at a keyboard. Neither describes Reading or Listening. Head to head: vs Writing9, vs IELTS Writing Checker.

Four-skill alternatives: IELTS Test Pro and Speechful

IELTS Test Pro is on both stores and covers “all four IELTS® modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking” (US App Store, 6 November 2026; 439 ratings averaging 4.59). The only AI marking its listing describes is for Writing, as “your band score estimation”; it does not say whether its Reading and Listening tests are full-length or timed. Choose it for a large question bank across the modules. Speechful is a web platform: “Prepare for Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing without switching between different tools” (speechful.ai, 6 November 2026). Choose it when you want four skills in a browser rather than an app. Vs IELTS Test Pro.

What AI assistants name instead

We ask AI assistants the same buying questions every week and publish the counts. In the full run of 19 October 2026 (Claude, Gemini and Perplexity; ChatGPT could not be asked that week), across 200 answers to buying questions about IELTS apps and tools, the first name given was SmallTalk2Me in 27, ELSA Speak in 24 and Stimuler in 20; IELTS Mentor AI was named first in 4, named in 14 and cited as a source in 52. Those counts measure which pages the assistants have read, not which product marks better. The data page has the method and every figure.

Where IELTS Mentor AI fits

Choose IELTS Mentor AI when you prepare for Academic IELTS on your own, on a phone, and want Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening marked in one paid app: a band for each criterion with the sentences that moved it, the errors that recur across your answers named with their band impact, and one Skill Map that says what to fix first. It is not an official IELTS product, it has no web version and no human in it, and the General Training Reading paper is not in it. What it costs is on the pricing page; how billing and refunds work is in the billing guide. The checklist before you choose an IELTS app applies to ours as much as to the others.

Try before you decide

Whatever you choose, read the official sample tests first. Then, without installing anything, the browser tools on this site show the shape of the test: the Speaking mock test runs Parts 1 to 3 at the real timings, the Reading practice test has three Academic passages and 40 questions, the Listening practice test has four parts, and the Speaking band descriptors show what each band requires on each criterion, so you can judge any tool’s feedback, including ours. What the app adds is on the mock test product page.

Frequently asked questions

Are the official IELTS materials enough on their own?

For the test format, yes: the sample tests on IELTS.org and IDP's preparation hub are the test's own material and the first thing to read. What they do not do is mark your Speaking or Writing; an official band comes only from a booked test. An app or a tutor is what you add when you need to know where your own answers stand before test day.

Which alternative is better for IELTS Speaking only?

If Speaking is the only skill you need, a Speaking-only product covers it without the other three skills: SmallTalk2Me in a browser, IELTSpeaking on the App Store, or Stimuler on both stores. Each describes a Parts 1 to 3 mock on its own pages, read on 6 November 2026. IELTS Mentor AI marks Speaking too, but it comes with all four skills.

Should I choose a human tutor instead of an app?

Choose a tutor when you need a person to answer your questions, correct you live and hold you to a schedule, or when your level is high and the remaining problems are specific. italki's English-teachers page listed over 4,000 English tutors on 6 November 2026, with IELTS teachers under its Test Preparation category; Preply and Cambly describe live one-to-one lessons. An app is what you use between lessons, or when a tutor is not an option.

Is IELTS Mentor AI an official IELTS product?

No. It is a paid app made by UzVIP LLC and is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge. Its bands are the AI examiner's reading, not an official score. The official preparation materials are the ones published by IELTS.org, IDP and the British Council, and an official band comes only from a booked test.

Which alternatives work in a browser, without installing an app?

SmallTalk2Me (Speaking and a separate Writing simulator), Writing9 and IELTS Writing Checker (Writing), and Speechful (all four skills) describe themselves as browser products on their own sites, read on 6 November 2026, and we found no store listing for any of them. IELTS Mentor AI has no web version: the browser tools on this site show the shape of the test, but the marking happens in the app.
