What level is IELTS 6.0?
Quick answer
IELTS 6.0 is the competent user band on the nine-band scale: effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. On IELTS's own alignment with the CEFR it is B2, in the middle of the 5.5 to 6.5 range. The alignment refers to the overall band, not to the four section scores.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
Band 6 is the one whole band in the middle of the scale, and it is also the middle of IELTS’s B2 range. Here is what IELTS publishes about it, and what it leaves to the organisation reading your score.
What 6.0 means on the IELTS scale
Band 6 is the competent user. The official description is effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings; the candidate can use and understand reasonably complex language, particularly in familiar situations. Band 5 below it is the modest user, with partial command. Band 7 above it is the good user, with operational command and occasional inaccuracies. The difference between 6 and 7 is mostly how often the lapses happen: at band 6 they are a normal feature of the performance. See what the IELTS band scores mean for the whole scale.
The CEFR level of IELTS 6.0
IELTS’s own alignment, on its page “IELTS and the CEFR”, places overall bands 5.5 to 6.5 at B2. A 6.0 is therefore B2 with no borderline note attached; the borderline notes in IELTS’s table are for band 5 (between B1 and B2) and band 8 (between C1 and C2). The alignment covers the overall band only, so a Reading 6.0 inside a lower overall is not “B2 in Reading” on any IELTS page. The band to CEFR answer has the full table and IELTS’s explanation of why the boundaries are not exact.
What a 6.0 opens
Every educational institution, employer and immigration body sets its own required IELTS scores, and IELTS has no pass mark, so there is no general answer here. What you can check is the form of the requirement: an overall band, a minimum in each of the four sections, or both. A university that asks only for “CEFR B2” is asking for a band between 5.5 and 6.5 in IELTS terms, and most such pages state the band they mean. Read their own admissions or visa page, and see what is a good IELTS score.
The gap to 6.5
The next half band is IELTS 6.5, and the one below is IELTS 5.5. Because the overall is the average of four sections rounded to the nearest half band, a stuck 6.0 often needs two sections to move. Put your scores in the band score calculator, then read the answer for the skill that is easiest to lift: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. The overall score answer shows the arithmetic.
What this means for your score
Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 5.5 add up to 23.0. Divided by four that is 5.75, and the overall band is the average rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 and .75 rounding up, so 5.75 rounds up to an overall 6.0. Two sections below 6.0 still reach it here.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 6.0 B1 or B2?
B2. IELTS places overall bands 5.5 to 6.5 at B2, and 6.0 is the middle of that range. Band 5 is the one marked borderline between B1 and B2.
Is 6.0 a good score in IELTS?
The scale calls band 6 a competent user. Whether it is enough depends on where you are applying, because IELTS has no pass mark and each institution, employer or immigration body sets its own required scores.
What can I do with IELTS 6.0?
Only the organisation receiving the score can say. Requirements are often an overall band plus a minimum in each section, so read the exact wording on their own admissions or visa page rather than relying on a general figure.
How do I go from 6.0 to 6.5?
Half a band in one section moves your average by only 0.125, so whether it changes the rounded overall depends on where you start. Use the band score calculator to find the section that actually moves it, and note that sometimes two sections have to improve.
