IELTS Mentor AI vs ELSA Speak for IELTS Speaking (2026)
Quick answer
ELSA Speak is a general AI pronunciation and speaking coach; its App Store listing names IELTS as one of several exams, and its homepage does not mention IELTS. It does not describe the four IELTS Speaking criteria, a band, or a Parts 1 to 3 mock. IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range. They answer different questions: how clearly you speak English, and what band your IELTS answers would get.
Every Speaking answer is marked on the four official criteria as a band range from strict to lenient, so you see how close to a boundary you are and which criterion decides it.

On this page
ELSA Speak is the most-named app when people ask an AI assistant about IELTS Speaking practice, and it was not built for IELTS. IELTS Mentor AI was built for nothing else. The comparison is therefore less “which is better” than “which question are you asking”: how clearly you pronounce English, or what band your IELTS answers would get. This page sets the two side by side using only what each product says about itself, with the dates we read it.
We make IELTS Mentor AI. Every fact about ELSA Speak below comes from its own listing or site, quoted with the date; check its current listing before you decide.
Key takeaways
- ELSA Speak describes itself as an AI pronunciation and speaking coach for work, interviews and several exams; its homepage does not mention IELTS, and its App Store listing names IELTS in one feature beside TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN and CEFR.
- It does not describe a band, the four IELTS Speaking criteria or a Parts 1 to 3 mock. IELTS Mentor AI marks each Speaking answer on the four criteria as a band range and runs the full three-part test.
- ELSA Speak covers speaking only. IELTS Mentor AI covers Speaking, Writing, Academic Reading and Listening.
- Neither gives an official IELTS result. Nothing here is a test of either product; it is a comparison of what each one states.
What ELSA Speak says it is
Its App Store listing, recorded on 18 September 2026, calls it “a leading AI-powered language coach designed to help professionals and learners speak English with confidence using our essential AI learning tools and custom learning pathways.” The features it itemises are pronunciation training (“Conquer tricky sounds with each daily English practice”), an interview coach, workplace vocabulary and progress tracking “showing your pace, hesitation, and grammar score.” IELTS appears in one line: “Exam Preparation – Prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN, CEFR, and more with targeted practice to boost fluency.”
Its English homepage, read on 3 October 2026, does not mention IELTS. It describes a Speech Analyzer with “detailed feedback and test-score predictions,” a Quick Evaluation, instant personalised feedback on every lesson, and fluency and confidence for interviews, presentations and meetings, on iOS and Android. On the US App Store the same day it showed 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75. The developer is ELSA, Corp.
What IELTS Mentor AI is
IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.
For Speaking, that is the full three-part test (Part 1 questions, a Part 2 cue card with one minute to prepare and one to two minutes to speak, then Part 3 questions, as IELTS.org describes the test) or Topic Speaking, one topic at a time. Every answer comes back with a band for Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Pronunciation, as a range from a strict examiner’s reading to a lenient one, with the sentences that moved each band. Blocking Issues names the errors that recur across your answers with the band they cost. The interface is in English. It is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge.
Where the two differ
What is being measured. ELSA Speak measures how you say English: sounds, words, pace, hesitation, with a grammar score. IELTS Mentor AI measures an IELTS answer: what you said, how it held together, the words and structures you reached for, and how it sounded, on the four criteria the examiner uses. Pronunciation is one of those four. The other three are not something a pronunciation coach claims to score.
The shape of the practice. ELSA Speak’s practice is lessons, drills and role-plays. IELTS Mentor AI’s is the test: a Part 1 interview, a Part 2 long turn after a minute of preparation, a Part 3 discussion, at the timings IELTS.org gives, and then the marking. A general app can make you sound clearer in a meeting; it does not rehearse the thing you will sit.
The score. ELSA Speak describes test-score predictions from its Speech Analyzer without saying which test’s scale. IELTS Mentor AI reports a band range per criterion, from strict to lenient, and says it is not an official score. If you need to know whether an answer is a 6.5 or a 7.0 on Lexical Resource, only the second kind of score answers that.
The other skills. ELSA Speak covers speaking. IELTS Mentor AI marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 on the four Writing criteria with a Data Accuracy check for Task 1, and runs full Academic Reading papers and four-part Listening tests, marked the moment you finish with the evidence behind every answer.
Where they meet. If Pronunciation is the criterion holding your Speaking band down, ELSA Speak’s sound-by-sound drilling does something IELTS Mentor AI does not set out to do, and the two can run side by side: drill the sounds in one, then check in the other whether the Pronunciation band moved.

What AI assistants say when asked
We check four AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 2 October 2026, across 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, ELSA Speak was named in 103, more than any other product, and was the first name in 31; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. Read the answers and ELSA Speak is recommended for pronunciation and confidence, with IELTS-specific scoring left to other names. The assistants are reading its own listing, which says the same.
Choose ELSA Speak if
- Pronunciation is the one thing you want to work on, sound by sound, every day.
- You also speak English at work or in interviews and want one coach for all of it.
- You are not yet preparing for a specific test date.
Choose IELTS Mentor AI if
- You want your IELTS Speaking answers marked on the four criteria, as a range, with the three parts rehearsed at the real timings.
- You want Writing, Reading and Listening marked in the same app.
- You want the errors that recur across your answers named, with the band each one costs.
Try before you decide
If you are not sure which criterion is holding you down, start with the three-minute self-assessment on this site, which estimates a band range without hearing you, and read the Speaking band descriptors for Pronunciation next to the other three. If Pronunciation is the lowest, a pronunciation coach is a fair first step. If it is not, the Speaking mock test shows the shape of the test in your browser, and the Speaking product page describes what the app adds.
Frequently asked questions
Does ELSA Speak give an IELTS band score?
Its listing does not say so. It describes a Speech Analyzer with test-score predictions, and feedback on pace, hesitation, grammar and pronunciation, but not a band on the four IELTS Speaking criteria. IELTS Mentor AI reports a band range per criterion and says it is not an official score; only an IELTS test gives one.
Is ELSA Speak useful for IELTS at all?
For pronunciation, which is one of the four Speaking criteria, its own description fits: sound-by-sound drilling and feedback on how you say a word. What it does not describe is the rest of the test: the three parts, the other three criteria, Writing, Reading and Listening.
Can I use both?
Yes, and they do not overlap much. ELSA Speak works on how a sound or a word is pronounced; IELTS Mentor AI marks a whole answer on the four criteria and tracks the errors that recur. Which one you need first depends on whether Pronunciation is your lowest criterion.
Which has more ratings?
ELSA Speak, by a long way: 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75 on the US App Store on 3 October 2026, the scale of a mainstream language app. Rating counts measure how many people use a product for anything, not how well it marks IELTS, which is why this page does not rank by them.
Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?
In our check of four assistants on 2 October 2026, ELSA Speak was named in 103 of 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, and was the first name in 31; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. ELSA Speak is named for pronunciation practice far more often than for IELTS scoring.
