IELTS Mentor AI vs SmallTalk2Me for IELTS Speaking (2026)

Quick answer

SmallTalk2Me runs in a browser with no app to install: its IELTS page describes a simulator for Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3, assessed on the four IELTS criteria, returning one predicted band from 1 to 9. IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, and full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish. Choose by where you practise and by what you want after the score.

Every Speaking answer comes back marked on the four official criteria as a band range from strict to lenient, with the sentences that moved each band and the recurring errors named.

On this page

SmallTalk2Me and IELTS Mentor AI both let you answer IELTS Speaking questions out loud and get a score on the four official criteria. After that they part ways: one is a website that returns a single predicted band, the other is an installed app for all four skills that returns a band range and tracks the errors behind it. This page sets the two side by side using only what each product says about itself, with the dates we read it.

We make IELTS Mentor AI. Every fact about SmallTalk2Me below comes from its own site, quoted with the date; check its current page before you decide.

Key takeaways

  • SmallTalk2Me is a browser product that works on a phone or a desktop with nothing to install; IELTS Mentor AI is a paid app on the App Store and Google Play.
  • Both say they assess Speaking on the four IELTS criteria. SmallTalk2Me returns one predicted band from 1 to 9; IELTS Mentor AI returns a range from a strict to a lenient reading, with the sentences that moved it.
  • SmallTalk2Me covers Speaking and, in a separate tool, Writing. IELTS Mentor AI covers Speaking, Writing, Academic Reading and Listening in one app.
  • Neither score is an official IELTS result. Nothing here is a test of either product; it is a comparison of what each one states.

What SmallTalk2Me says it is

Its IELTS page, read on 3 October 2026, describes a simulator: “Speak into your mic to simulate the entire IELTS exam, covering time limits and question formats for Parts 1, 2, and 3.” The answers are “assessed across the 4 IELTS speaking criteria: Pronunciation, Grammatical range and accuracy, Lexical resource, Fluency and coherence,” and you “Receive your immediate predicted IELTS Band Score (1-9).” The same page says the product “runs right in your browser. No downloads or setup required,” and that the simulator “works on both mobile devices and desktop computers with no app download required.” A separate IELTS Writing tool is linked from the page, and the FAQ contrasts the simulator with human tutors: it is an AI-only product.

On 18 September 2026 we also recorded a CEFR level test, and shadowing, listening and quiz modes on its homepage that we could not confirm follow the IELTS Listening format. We found no Reading feature and no App Store or Google Play listing, and its site carries no store badges. The company behind it is SmallTalk Inc.

What IELTS Mentor AI is

IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.

For Speaking that means the full three-part test (Part 1 questions, a Part 2 cue card with one minute to prepare and one to two minutes to speak, Part 3 questions, as IELTS.org describes the test) or Topic Speaking, one topic at a time with follow-up questions. Every answer comes back with a band for Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Pronunciation, as a range from a strict examiner’s reading to a lenient one. Blocking Issues names the errors that recur across your answers with the band they cost, and Review Due brings back what you fixed before you would forget it. The interface is in English. It is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge.

Where the two differ

Where you practise. SmallTalk2Me opens in a browser tab, on a phone as well as a laptop, and asks for no installation. IELTS Mentor AI is installed from the App Store or Google Play and lives on the home screen. If your practice happens at a desk with a good microphone, the browser takes nothing away; if it happens in gaps on a phone, an installed app is one tap away and can remind you.

How the score is reported. SmallTalk2Me gives one predicted band from 1 to 9 after each simulation. IELTS Mentor AI gives a range for each criterion, from strict to lenient, because two examiners can read the same answer half a band apart; the range shows how close to a boundary you are and which criterion decides it. Neither is an official score.

What happens after the score. SmallTalk2Me promises “clear feedback on what you did well and exactly what to improve” after each practice. IELTS Mentor AI feeds every test into one Skill Map (articles, tenses, cohesion, collocations, prepositions, word form and more, each as a percentage), puts the error that appears in 80% or more of your responses at the top as the Skill to Fix First, and schedules Review Due with the FSRS algorithm. The difference is between feedback per session and a record across sessions.

The other skills. SmallTalk2Me has a separate Writing simulator and general listening and quiz modes. IELTS Mentor AI marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 on the four Writing criteria with a Data Accuracy check for Task 1, and runs full Academic Reading papers and four-part Listening tests, marked the moment you finish with the sentence or transcript line behind every answer. If you are preparing for the whole test, that is the largest difference on this page.

Starting level. IELTS Mentor AI has a Foundation Track for candidates around Band 3 to 5, about ten minutes a day in three levels that unlock in order; level A covers Band 3.0 to 4.0. SmallTalk2Me offers a CEFR level test, which gives a general level independent of any band.

What AI assistants say when asked

We check four AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 2 October 2026, across 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, SmallTalk2Me was the first name given in 46; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. The assistants mostly cited SmallTalk2Me’s own IELTS page. That tells you which pages they have read, not which product marks better, and it is one reason this page exists: a reader who hears one name and goes looking should find the comparison, with dates, in one place.

Choose SmallTalk2Me if

  • You practise at a desk, or you do not want to install anything.
  • You want one predicted band after each simulation and feedback for that session.
  • A CEFR level, independent of IELTS, is useful to you a long way out from test day.

Choose IELTS Mentor AI if

  • You want Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening marked in one place, under exam timing.
  • You want a range per criterion rather than one number, and the recurring errors named with the band they cost.
  • Your practice happens on a phone in short gaps, and a record across sessions matters more than a score for one.

Try before you decide

Both products’ scoring happens inside the product. What you can do first, without either, is see the shape of the test: the Speaking mock test on this site runs Parts 1 to 3 at the real timings in your browser, with optional recording that stays on your device; the self-assessment gives a rough band range in three minutes; and the Speaking band descriptors show what each band requires on each criterion, so you can judge any tool’s feedback, including ours. What the app adds is described on the Speaking product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is SmallTalk2Me an app?

No. Its IELTS page, read on 3 October 2026, says the simulator runs in the browser on both mobile devices and desktop computers with no app download, and we found no App Store or Google Play listing for it. It opens on a phone, but it is a website, not an installed app.

Do both score on the four IELTS Speaking criteria?

Both say so. SmallTalk2Me's IELTS page lists Pronunciation, Grammatical range and accuracy, Lexical resource, and Fluency and coherence. IELTS Mentor AI reports a band for each of the same four criteria, as a range from a strict to a lenient reading, with the sentences that moved it.

Which one gives a real IELTS band?

Neither. SmallTalk2Me calls its score a predicted band; IELTS Mentor AI reports a band range and says it is not an official score. Only an IELTS test gives an official band.

Does either cover Reading and Listening?

IELTS Mentor AI has full Academic Reading papers and four-part Listening tests, marked the moment you finish. SmallTalk2Me's homepage lists listening and quiz modes that we could not confirm follow the IELTS format, and we found no Reading feature on 18 September 2026.

Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?

In our check of four assistants on 2 October 2026, SmallTalk2Me was the first name in 46 of 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. That reflects which product pages the assistants had read, not a test of either product.
