IELTS Mentor AI vs IELTS Writing Checker for IELTS Writing (2026)
Quick answer
IELTS Writing Checker is a website, not an app: its pages describe a checker for Writing Task 1 reports and letters and Task 2 essays that returns an estimated band with feedback on the four criteria, plus a Writing Coach and a Vocabulary Trainer, and we found no App Store or Google Play listing for it. IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Writing and Speaking on the four official criteria and reports a band range, and full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish. Choose by whether Writing is your only gap.
Every Writing task is marked on the four official criteria as a band range from a strict to a lenient reading, with an Examiner's Summary, and a Task 1 report's figures are checked against the chart's own data.

On this page
IELTS Writing Checker and IELTS Mentor AI both let you submit an IELTS Writing answer and get it marked by software against the four Writing criteria. After that they part ways: one is a website built around Writing, with an estimated band, a coach for planning and drafting, and a vocabulary trainer; the other is an installed app for all four skills that returns a band range per criterion and tracks the errors behind it. This page sets the two side by side using only what each product says about itself, with the dates we read it.
We make IELTS Mentor AI. Every fact about IELTS Writing Checker below comes from its own site, quoted with the date; check its current pages before you decide.
Key takeaways
- IELTS Writing Checker is a browser product with no app to install; IELTS Mentor AI is a paid app on the App Store and Google Play.
- Both mark Writing Task 1 and Task 2 on the four criteria. IELTS Writing Checker returns an estimated band with criterion feedback; IELTS Mentor AI returns a range from a strict to a lenient reading for each criterion, with an Examiner’s Summary and, for Task 1, a Data Accuracy check against the chart.
- IELTS Writing Checker is built around Writing only, with a Writing Coach and a Vocabulary Trainer. IELTS Mentor AI covers Writing, Speaking, Academic Reading and Listening in one app.
- Neither score is an official IELTS result. Nothing here is a test of either product; it is a comparison of what each one states.
What IELTS Writing Checker says it is
Its homepage, read on 21 October 2026, describes an AI IELTS writing checker “for Task 1 reports, Task 1 letters, and Task 2 essays”, for Academic and General Training. You choose the paper and the task, paste “the complete prompt and response”, and the checker “returns an estimated score and specific feedback for the four IELTS Writing assessment areas”. It promises “an estimated IELTS band score (0-9) based on official IELTS Writing criteria” and “detailed error highlighting and actionable corrections”.
It has three task pages: Academic Task 1 (“Charts, maps and processes”, checking “the overview, key features, comparisons, data language and grammar”), General Training Task 1 letters (“the purpose, bullet-point coverage, tone, organisation and language”) and Task 2 essays (“your position, task response, idea development, paragraphing, vocabulary and grammar”). Beside the checker it describes a “Writing Coach” that “teaches planning and drafting one step at a time”, a “Vocabulary Trainer” that moves words “through meaning, collocation, sentence practice, and real IELTS paragraphs”, and a “Writing Agent” whose “Agent’s Analysis connects a premium evaluation with your recent essays” and whose “Writing Patterns” show “what keeps recurring”. It also offers an optional expert human review of an essay, with feedback “within 48 hours”.
On how close its score is to the exam, it says: “The result is designed to help you revise a practice response. It is not an official IELTS score and cannot replace an assessment by a certificated IELTS examiner.” Its research page calls it “an independent practice service”. We found no App Store or Google Play listing, no store badge, and no Speaking, Reading or Listening feature. It shows what it costs on its own pages; we do not repeat that here.
What IELTS Mentor AI is
IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.
For Writing that means Task 1 (Academic charts, graphs, tables and maps, and General Training letters) and Task 2, written in a timed editor with a live word count. Every answer comes back with a band for Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, as a range from a strict examiner’s reading to a lenient one, with an Examiner’s Summary. A Data Accuracy check compares a Task 1 report’s figures with the chart’s own data, so a misread chart is separated from a language mistake. Blocking Issues names the errors that recur across your writing with the band they cost, and Review Due brings back what you fixed before you would forget it. The interface is in English. It is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge.
Where the two differ
Where you write. IELTS Writing Checker opens in a browser tab, on a laptop or a phone; you choose the task, paste the prompt and your response, and submit. IELTS Mentor AI is installed from the App Store or Google Play, with a timed editor inside it. If you draft essays at a keyboard, the browser takes nothing away; if your practice happens in gaps on a phone, an installed app is one tap away.
How the score is reported. IELTS Writing Checker gives an estimated band from 0 to 9, with feedback under the four criteria; its sample report shows an overall estimate and a score for each criterion. IELTS Mentor AI gives a range for each criterion, from strict to lenient, because two examiners can read the same essay half a band apart; the range shows how close to a boundary you are and which criterion decides it. Neither is an official score, and IELTS Writing Checker says the same of its own.
Task 1 and the chart. Both take Task 1 reports and letters. IELTS Writing Checker’s report checker says it checks “the overview, key features, comparisons, data language and grammar”; it does not describe a check of the figures in a report against the chart’s own data. IELTS Mentor AI’s Data Accuracy check does that, which matters because Task Achievement in Task 1 depends on getting the data right.
What happens after the score. IELTS Writing Checker connects a premium evaluation with your recent essays and shows recurring “Writing Patterns” and a next action, and teaches planning and vocabulary in its Coach and Trainer. IELTS Mentor AI feeds every test into one Skill Map (articles, tenses, cohesion, collocations, prepositions, word form and more, each as a percentage), puts the error that appears in 80% or more of your responses at the top as the Skill to Fix First, and schedules Review Due with the FSRS algorithm. Both track patterns across essays; the difference is that IELTS Writing Checker teaches Writing around them, and IELTS Mentor AI keeps one record across all four skills.
The other skills. IELTS Writing Checker is built for Writing only; we found no Speaking, Reading or Listening feature. IELTS Mentor AI marks Speaking on the four criteria across the full three-part test, and runs full Academic Reading papers and four-part Listening tests, marked the moment you finish with the sentence or transcript line behind every answer. If you are preparing for the whole test, that is the largest difference on this page. If Writing is your only gap, it matters less.

What AI assistants say when asked
We check AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 14 October 2026, three of the four assistants answered (the fourth could not run); across their 6 answers to two buying questions about IELTS Writing feedback apps and tools, IELTS Writing Checker was named in 5 and was the first name given in 2, and three answers cited its site as a source. IELTS Mentor AI was named in 1 and cited as a source in 2. That tells you which pages the assistants have read, not which product marks better, and it is one reason this page exists: a reader who hears one name and goes looking should find the comparison, with dates, in one place. For the wider field, see the IELTS Writing feedback apps and essay checkers compared, and for the other browser checker assistants name, IELTS Mentor AI vs Writing9.
Choose IELTS Writing Checker if
- You write at a keyboard and want to paste a prompt and a response into a browser and get an estimated band with criterion feedback, with nothing to install.
- Writing is the only skill you are working on, and you want step-by-step teaching of planning and vocabulary beside the checker.
- You may want a person to read one essay, which its optional expert review offers.
Choose IELTS Mentor AI if
- You want Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening marked in one place, under exam timing.
- You want a range per criterion rather than one estimate, a check of your Task 1 report’s figures against the chart, and the recurring errors named with the band they cost.
- Your practice happens on a phone in short gaps, and a record across sessions and skills matters more than a score for one essay.
Try before you decide
Both products’ marking happens inside the product. What you can do first, without either and without a sign-in, is check the shape of your answer: the Writing Task 1 practice tool checks a report’s length, overview and figures against the chart’s data; the essay checker checks a Task 2 draft’s length, paragraphs, position and linking; and the Writing band descriptors show what each band requires on each criterion, so you can judge any tool’s feedback, including ours. They cannot read what your sentences mean; the marking on the four criteria happens in the app. What the app adds is described on the Writing product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS Writing Checker an app?
No. Its pages, read on 21 October 2026, describe a checker you open in a browser at ieltswritingchecker.com, where you choose the task, paste the prompt and your response, and submit. We found no App Store or Google Play listing and no store badge on the site. It opens on a phone, but it is a website, not an installed app.
Do both mark Task 1 and Task 2?
Both say so. IELTS Writing Checker has separate checkers for Academic Task 1 reports ("Charts, maps and processes"), General Training Task 1 letters and Task 2 essays. IELTS Mentor AI marks Task 1 (Academic charts, graphs, tables and maps, and General Training letters) and Task 2 in a timed editor, and its Data Accuracy check compares a Task 1 report's figures with the chart.
Do both score on the four IELTS Writing criteria?
Both name the four. IELTS Writing Checker says it gives "a practice band estimate with feedback on Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy". IELTS Mentor AI reports a band for each of the same four criteria, as a range from a strict to a lenient reading.
Which one gives a real IELTS band?
Neither. IELTS Writing Checker says its result "is not an official IELTS score and cannot replace an assessment by a certificated IELTS examiner"; IELTS Mentor AI reports a band range and says it is not an official score. Only an IELTS test gives an official band.
Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?
In our check of three assistants on 14 October 2026, IELTS Writing Checker was named in 5 of 6 answers to buying questions about IELTS Writing feedback apps and tools, and was the first name in 2; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 1 and cited as a source in 2. That reflects which pages the assistants had read, not a test of either product.
