Band 6
I would like to talk about a book called Animal Farm, which was written by George Orwell. I have readError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “read”, porque ese momento ya pasó it two years ago in Tbilisi, because my English teacher said usError de estructura verbal: debería ser “told us” o “asked us” to read it for our literature class. The story is about a farm where the animals decidesError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “decide” to send away the farmer and run the farm by themselves. There are pigs, horses, sheep and dogs in it. The sheep say the same short sentences all the time, and the dogs help the pigs to keep control. I liked this because the animals have different characters, like real people. At the beginning everything is very goodExpresión básica; limita el Lexical Resource, but slowly the pigs become the new leaders and they start to act like the farmer. The horse Boxer works very hard for everybody, and the pigs do not treat him fairError de adjetivo o adverbio: debería ser “fairly” at the end. ErVacilación natural, muletilla leve, I almost cried when I read this part. In my opinion it is a very good book because it looks like a simple story for children, but it is really about people who have power and how they can change. It is also short, so it was more easyError de comparativo: debería ser “easier” than I expected. You knowMuletilla usada como marcador de vacilación, I think it is a story that everybody should read, young people and also adults, because the message is still very importantExpresión básica; limita el Lexical Resource today. After I finished it, my friends and I had a long discussion in the class, and the teacher was very pleased.
Band 7
I’d like to talk about a book called Animal Farm, which was written by George Orwell. I read it two years ago in Tbilisi, because my English teacher asked us to read it for our literature class. The story is set on a farm where the animals decide to chase out the farmer and run things themselves. There are pigs, horses, sheep and dogs in it. The sheep repeat the same slogans all the time, and the dogs help the pigs to keep control. I liked how each kind of animal has its own personality, just like people we know. At first everything goes well, but gradually the pigs become the new rulers and start behaving like the farmer. Boxer, the horse, works tirelessly for everyone, and the way the pigs treat him at the endSintagma nominal como sujeto; estructura controlada is really upsetting; I almost cried when I read that part. In my opinion, it’s an excellent book because it looks like a simple children’s story, but it’s actually an allegory about powerVocabulario preciso del tema and how it can change people. It’s also quite short, so it was more easyError de comparativo: debería ser “easier” to finish than I expected. What I liked mostSeñalización clara de la opinión was that the language is plain, yet the message is serious, and I think everybody should read it, young people and adults alike, because it’s still highly relevant todayColocación natural. After I finished it, my classmates and I had a long discussion in class, and our teacher was clearly pleased that we had noticed so much.
Band 8
I’d like to talk about a book called Animal Farm, by George Orwell. I read it two years ago in Tbilisi, because my English teacher asked us to read it for our literature class. The story is set on a farm where the animals decide to drive out the farmer and run things for themselves. There are pigs, horses, sheep and dogs, and at first everything goes well, but gradually the pigs become the new rulers and start behaving just like the farmer they replaced. The sheep chant the same slogans over and over, while the dogs enforce the pigs’ wishes, and I enjoyed how each kind of animal stands for a different type of person. Boxer, the horse, works tirelessly for everyone, and the way he is treated by the pigs in the endEstructura pasiva dentro de un sintagma nominal, usada con acierto genuinely upset me; I almost cried. In my opinion, it’s an excellent book, because what looks like a simple children’s story is really an allegory about how power can corruptVocabulario del tema preciso e idiomático. It’s also short and written in plain language, so it was far easier to finish than I expected, yet the message is serious. If I had to pick one thing that stayed with meMarcador discursivo natural que introduce una reflexión personal, it would be how quickly the other animals stopped questioning what they were told. I’d urge everybody to read it, young people and adults alike, because it remains strikingly relevantFraseo preciso y natural today. When we finished it, my classmates and I had a lively discussion in class, and our teacher was delighted that we had noticed so much beneath the surface.
Qué hizo subir la banda
- Los deslices de Band 6 (“I have read it two years ago”, “said us”, “the animals decides”) son correctos en Band 7 (“I read it two years ago”, “asked us”, “the animals decide”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
- Band 6 se apoya en “very good” y “very important”; Band 7 usa “an allegory about power” y “highly relevant today”; Band 8 las afina con “an allegory about how power can corrupt” y “strikingly relevant”.
- Band 6 da la opinión en una afirmación simple (“it is a very good book”); Band 7 añade “What I liked most”; Band 8 termina con una reflexión personal: “If I had to pick one thing that stayed with me”.
- Why do so many stories for children use animals instead of people?¿Por qué tantas historias para niños usan animales en lugar de personas?
- Do you think reading fiction is a good way to learn about the real world?¿Crees que leer ficción es una buena forma de aprender cómo es el mundo real?
- Should schools decide which books students have to read?¿Deberían las escuelas decidir qué libros tienen que leer los estudiantes?
- How have audiobooks and e-books changed the way people read?¿Cómo han cambiado los audiolibros y los libros electrónicos la forma en que la gente lee?
- Is a story with a message better than a story written only for enjoyment?¿Una historia con un mensaje es mejor que una historia escrita solo para disfrutar?
Preguntas frecuentes
