SmallTalk2Me vs ELSA Speak for IELTS Speaking, and a third option (2026)
Quick answer
SmallTalk2Me is a browser-based IELTS Speaking simulator for Parts 1, 2 and 3 that names the four IELTS criteria and returns one predicted band from 1 to 9. ELSA Speak is a general AI pronunciation and speaking coach in apps; its homepage, read on 3 October 2026, does not mention IELTS, and its App Store listing names IELTS as one of several exams. One is built for the test, the other for how you sound. IELTS Mentor AI, a paid app for all four skills, is a third option described below.
Every Speaking answer is marked on the four official criteria as a band range from strict to lenient, so you see how close to a boundary you are and which criterion decides it.

On this page
Ask an AI assistant where to practise IELTS Speaking and two names come up again and again: SmallTalk2Me and ELSA Speak. One is a simulator of the test that runs in a browser; the other is a general pronunciation and speaking coach in apps whose homepage does not mention IELTS. This page sets them side by side using only what each says about itself, with the dates we read it, and then says where a third option sits.
We make IELTS Mentor AI, the third option at the end of this page. Every fact about SmallTalk2Me and ELSA Speak below comes from their own sites or store listings, quoted with the date; check their current pages before you decide.
Key takeaways
- SmallTalk2Me is an IELTS Speaking simulator in a browser, with no store listing; ELSA Speak is a general pronunciation and speaking coach on iOS and Android that names IELTS as one of several exams.
- SmallTalk2Me names all four IELTS Speaking criteria and returns one predicted band from 1 to 9. ELSA Speak describes pronunciation, pace, hesitation and a grammar score, and test-score predictions from a Speech Analyzer.
- ELSA Speak’s homepage, read on 3 October 2026, does not mention IELTS; its App Store listing does, in one feature beside other exams.
- None of the three scores is an official IELTS result; nothing here is a test of any product.
What SmallTalk2Me says it is
Its IELTS page, read on 3 October 2026, describes a simulator: “Speak into your mic to simulate the entire IELTS exam, covering time limits and question formats for Parts 1, 2, and 3.” The answers are “assessed across the 4 IELTS speaking criteria: Pronunciation, Grammatical range and accuracy, Lexical resource, Fluency and coherence,” and you “Receive your immediate predicted IELTS Band Score (1-9).” Its homepage promises “clear feedback on what you did well and exactly what to improve.”
The page says the product “runs right in your browser. No downloads or setup required,” and that it works on mobile devices and desktop computers. A separate IELTS Writing tool is linked from the site, and the FAQ frames the product as AI-only, in contrast to human tutors. The company behind it is SmallTalk Inc. We found no App Store or Google Play listing, so there is no store rating to cite.
What ELSA Speak says it is
Its App Store listing, recorded on 18 September 2026, calls it an “AI-powered language coach designed to help professionals and learners speak English with confidence using our essential AI learning tools and custom learning pathways.” It itemises pronunciation training (“Conquer tricky sounds with each daily English practice”) and “Indepth Analysis & Progress Tracking” showing “your pace, hesitation, and grammar score.” IELTS appears in one line: “Prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN, CEFR, and more with targeted practice to boost fluency.”
Its English homepage, read on 3 October 2026, does not mention IELTS at all. It describes a Speech Analyzer with detailed feedback and test-score predictions, a Quick Evaluation, instant personalised feedback on every lesson, and fluency and confidence for interviews, presentations and meetings, on iOS and Android. On the US App Store the same day it showed 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75. The developer is ELSA, Corp. We found no claim of IELTS criterion scoring, a timed Speaking mock split into Parts 1 to 3, or Writing feedback.
Where the two differ
Where it runs. SmallTalk2Me opens in a browser, on a laptop or a phone, with nothing to install. ELSA Speak is installed from the App Store or Google Play, and its homepage describes iOS and Android apps.
What it is built for. SmallTalk2Me presents itself as an IELTS simulator: its Speaking tool copies the time limits and question formats of the test, and a separate tool covers Writing. ELSA Speak presents itself as a general coach for professionals and learners, with exam preparation as one feature among several, and its homepage leaves IELTS out.
The skills and criteria covered. SmallTalk2Me names all four IELTS Speaking criteria and covers Parts 1 to 3. ELSA Speak’s listing describes pronunciation, pace, hesitation and a grammar score, but the listing does not name the criteria. Neither page describes full Reading or Listening tests.
How the score is reported. SmallTalk2Me gives a single predicted band from 1 to 9 after each simulation. ELSA Speak’s homepage describes test-score predictions from its Speech Analyzer without saying which test’s scale; we found no IELTS band described. Neither is an official score.
What happens after the score. SmallTalk2Me promises feedback on what you did well and what to improve after each practice. ELSA Speak describes progress tracking of pace, hesitation and grammar score, and instant feedback on every lesson. We found no claim from either page of a record kept across IELTS sessions by criterion.

What AI assistants say when asked
We check four AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 2 October 2026, across 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, ELSA Speak was named in 103 and was the first name given in 31; SmallTalk2Me was named in 81 and was first in 46; IELTS Mentor AI was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. That tells you which pages the assistants have read, not which product marks better, and not a test of any of the three.
Choose SmallTalk2Me if
- You want to rehearse the test’s three Speaking parts with its time limits and question formats, and see all four criteria named.
- You practise at a desk, or you do not want to install anything.
- One predicted band from 1 to 9 after each simulation is the kind of feedback you want.
Choose ELSA Speak if
- Pronunciation is the one thing you want to work on, sound by sound, every day, in an app.
- You also speak English at work, in interviews or in meetings and want one coach for all of it, with exam preparation as one feature among several.
- You are not yet preparing for a specific test date, or you are preparing for another exam on its list.
The third option: IELTS Mentor AI
IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.
By the rows above: like ELSA Speak it is an installed app on both stores; like SmallTalk2Me it is built for the IELTS test only and rehearses the three Speaking parts. Each Speaking answer comes back with a band for Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Pronunciation, as a range from a strict examiner’s reading to a lenient one, with the sentences that moved each band. Neither of the other two pages describes a range per criterion, a record across sessions or full Listening tests.
What it lacks that one of them has: there is no browser product, so nothing to try without installing; there is no sound-by-sound pronunciation drilling like the one ELSA Speak describes, and no general conversation mode; and the interface is in English only. We cite no store rating for it. It is not an official product and is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge, and its band range is not an official score.
Choose IELTS Mentor AI if
- You want Speaking, Writing, Academic Reading and Listening marked in one app under exam timing.
- You want a range per criterion rather than one number, and the recurring errors named with their band impact.
- You are preparing over weeks and want one record across every test, not a score per session.
Try before you decide
If you are not sure which criterion is holding you down, start with the three-minute self-assessment, which estimates a band range without hearing you, and read the Speaking band descriptors for Pronunciation next to the other three. The Speaking mock test shows the shape of the test in your browser, and the Speaking product page describes what the app adds.
Frequently asked questions
Is SmallTalk2Me an app, like ELSA Speak?
No. SmallTalk2Me's IELTS page, read on 3 October 2026, says the simulator runs in the browser on mobile devices and desktop computers with no app download, and we found no App Store or Google Play listing for it. ELSA Speak is an iOS and Android app, with a website at elsaspeak.com.
Do both name the four IELTS Speaking criteria?
SmallTalk2Me does. Its IELTS page lists Pronunciation, Grammatical range and accuracy, Lexical resource, and Fluency and coherence. ELSA Speak's listing, recorded on 18 September 2026, describes pronunciation, pace, hesitation and a grammar score, not the four criteria, and its homepage does not mention IELTS.
Which one has more ratings?
ELSA Speak showed 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75 on the US App Store on 3 October 2026. SmallTalk2Me has no store listing, so it has no store rating to compare. Rating counts show how many people use a product for anything, not how well it marks IELTS.
Which one gives a real IELTS band?
None of the three; only the test does. SmallTalk2Me calls its score a predicted band, ELSA Speak describes test-score predictions without naming a test scale, and IELTS Mentor AI reports a band range and says it is not an official score.
Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?
In our check of four assistants on 2 October 2026, ELSA Speak was named in 103 of 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools and was the first name in 31; SmallTalk2Me was named in 81 and first in 46. That reflects which pages the assistants had read, not a test of either product.
