ELSA Speak vs Speechful for IELTS, and a third option (2026)

Quick answer

ELSA Speak describes itself as an AI pronunciation and speaking coach on iOS and Android, with IELTS named as one of several exams; Speechful describes a web AI IELTS examiner for Speaking Parts 1 to 3, an AI grader for Writing Task 1 and 2, and a timed Reading test. The difference that decides between them is whether you want a general coach or a test-shaped simulator in the browser. A third option, an app covering all four skills, is set beside them at the end of this page.

The errors that recur across your answers are named with the band impact they carry, and the one that appears in 80% or more of your responses is put first, so practice goes to what is holding a criterion down.

On this page

ELSA Speak and Speechful are weighed against each other because both promise AI feedback on your spoken English, and both turn up when an assistant is asked about IELTS Speaking practice. They are built differently: one is a phone app for English in general, the other a website shaped like the test. This page sets them side by side using only what each says about itself, with the dates we read it.

We make IELTS Mentor AI, the third option at the end of this page. Every fact about ELSA Speak and Speechful below comes from their own sites or store listings, quoted with the date; check their current pages before you decide.

Key takeaways

  • ELSA Speak is a general AI pronunciation and speaking coach on iOS and Android; IELTS is one of several exams in its store listing and is absent from its homepage. Speechful is a website that describes Speaking, Writing and Reading modules for IELTS.
  • ELSA Speak reports test-score predictions and a Speech Analyzer; Speechful reports a band score per module. Neither page describes Listening.
  • The third option covers all four skills in one paid app, with no browser product and no general conversation mode.
  • None of the three scores is an official IELTS result; nothing here is a test of any product.

What ELSA Speak says it is

ELSA Speak’s App Store listing, read on 18 September 2026, describes an AI-powered language coach for professionals and learners, with “Pronunciation Training” and “Indepth Analysis & Progress Tracking” showing “your pace, hesitation, and grammar score”. IELTS appears in one feature: “Prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, EIKEN, CEFR, and more with targeted practice”. When we re-read the English homepage on 3 October 2026 it did not mention IELTS at all; it describes a Speech Analyzer with detailed feedback and test-score predictions, a Quick Evaluation, instant personalised feedback on every lesson, interview preparation, and fluency and confidence for workplace scenarios, presentations and meetings.

It runs as iOS and Android apps. On the US App Store on 3 October 2026 it showed 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75, and the seller is listed as ELSA, Corp. Its listing does not describe IELTS-specific criterion scoring, a full timed Speaking mock split into Parts 1 to 3, or Writing Task 1 and 2 feedback; we found no claim of any of them.

What Speechful says it is

Speechful describes itself, in the lines we recorded on 18 September 2026, as a place to “Speak with an AI IELTS examiner and get your band score in minutes”, with a Writing grader for Task 1 and Task 2 and a timed Reading practice test that gives “your estimated band score”. It runs on the web, through module pages for Speaking, Writing and Reading. We found no App Store or Google Play listing under any search variant, and its site carries no store badges.

Its Speaking pages describe practice across Parts 1, 2 and 3 under timed, exam-like conditions, and its Speaking-grader page names Fluency, Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Pronunciation as scoring dimensions. It describes a mini-exercise tailored to a learner’s own vocabulary mistakes and a detailed report after each mock test. Its Writing grader page names Coherence, Grammatical Range and Lexical Resource as writing criteria. We found no dedicated Listening module, and the company’s legal name was not stated on the pages we read.

Where the two differ

Where it runs. ELSA Speak is an app on iOS and Android, with a website for the same product. Speechful is a website; on 18 September 2026 we found no store listing for it, so it is something you open in a browser rather than install.

What it is built for. ELSA Speak calls itself a coach for speaking English with confidence at work, in interviews, presentations and meetings, with exam preparation as one feature among several. Speechful’s module pages are titled for IELTS Speaking, Writing and Reading, and its headline promise is an examiner and a band score.

The skills and parts covered. ELSA Speak’s pages describe speaking and pronunciation only, and they do not describe a Parts 1 to 3 structure; we found no claim of one. Speechful covers three papers: Speaking Parts 1 to 3 as timed mocks, Writing Tasks 1 and 2, and a timed Reading test. Neither page describes Listening.

How the score is reported. ELSA Speak describes test-score predictions and a Speech Analyzer with feedback on pace, hesitation and grammar, with no band on the four IELTS Speaking criteria. Speechful says you get a band score in minutes for Speaking and an estimated band on the Reading test, and names the dimensions it scores. On the test, Speaking and Writing are reported as a whole or half band; a band from a tool is an estimate.

What happens after the score. ELSA Speak describes progress tracking and instant personalised feedback on every lesson, so the loop is practice, feedback, repeat. Speechful describes a detailed report after each mock and an exercise built from your own vocabulary mistakes. Neither page, in what we recorded, says how results are kept across weeks of practice beyond those descriptions; we found no claim either way.

What AI assistants say when asked

We check four AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 2 October 2026, across 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, ELSA Speak was named in 103 and was the first name given in 31; Speechful was named in 27 and was first in 8. Our app was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. That tells you which pages the assistants had read, not which product serves a candidate better, and it is not a test of any of the three.

Choose ELSA Speak if

  • You want to work on how your English sounds, sound by sound, and the rest of the time on speaking at work or in interviews.
  • You want an app on your phone, on iOS or Android, rather than a website.
  • IELTS is one of several goals, and a prediction of your level is enough rather than a band on each criterion.

Choose Speechful if

  • You want a timed mock of Speaking Parts 1 to 3 with an AI examiner and a band score in minutes, as its page describes.
  • You also want Writing Task 1 and 2 graded and a timed Reading test in the same place.
  • You are content to work in a browser and to check, before you rely on a score, how it was produced.

The third option: IELTS Mentor AI

IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.

By the rows above, it has what neither page describes: Listening, in full four-part tests with Exam and Practice mode; a band for each Speaking criterion as a range from a strict examiner’s reading to a lenient one; and a record across sessions, where recurring errors are named as Blocking Issues with their band impact and the one in 80% or more of your responses is put first. It also has what ELSA Speak does not describe, the three-part Speaking test and Writing, and what Speechful does, Reading, as full Academic papers.

It lacks what each of them has. It has no browser product, unlike Speechful, and no general conversation or pronunciation drilling, unlike ELSA Speak; it has no live tutors; its interface is in English only; and it is not an official product and is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge.

Choose IELTS Mentor AI if

  • You want Listening and all three other papers marked in one app under exam timing.
  • You want a range per criterion rather than one number, and the recurring errors named with their band impact.
  • You are preparing over weeks and want one record across every test, on a phone.

Try before you decide

All three products score inside the product. What you can do first, without any of them, is sit the browser tests on this site: the Speaking mock test runs Parts 1 to 3 at the real timings, the Reading practice test has three Academic passages and 40 questions marked the moment you submit, and the Listening practice test has four parts and 40 questions read by your browser’s own voices. Only the full Reading and Listening sittings show a band, an indicative one, and the Speaking mock shows none. What the app adds is described on the Speaking product page.

Frequently asked questions

Does ELSA Speak give an IELTS band score?

Its pages do not say so. The ELSA Speak homepage, re-read on 3 October 2026, describes a Speech Analyzer with detailed feedback and test-score predictions, and does not mention IELTS; its App Store listing names IELTS as one of several exams. We found no claim of a band on the four IELTS Speaking criteria.

Does Speechful give an IELTS band score?

Its pages, recorded on 18 September 2026, say "Speak with an AI IELTS examiner and get your band score in minutes" and describe an estimated band on its Reading test. That is an automated estimate; only an IELTS test gives an official band.

Which of the two is on the App Store and Google Play?

ELSA Speak has iOS and Android apps; on 3 October 2026 its US App Store listing showed 113,381 ratings averaging 4.75. For Speechful we found no App Store or Google Play listing on 18 September 2026, only its website. Check each current listing before you decide.

Which one gives a real IELTS band?

None of the three products on this page. ELSA Speak, Speechful and the app described at the end all estimate; only the IELTS test gives an official result. Speaking and Writing scores on the test are reported as a whole or half band.

Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?

In our check of four assistants on 2 October 2026, ELSA Speak was named in 103 of 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools and was the first name in 31; Speechful was named in 27 and first in 8. That reflects which pages the assistants had read, not a test of either product.
