Band 6

I would like to describe my grandfather Tomasz, who liveError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “lives” in Krakow in Poland. He is a retired railway engineer, but his real passion is history, and he has been interested in it since he was a boy. He learns about it in many ways. At home he haveError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “has” a whole shelf of books about kings, wars and ordinary people, and in the evening he watches documentaries on television. At the weekend he often goes to castles and museums, and he writes new facts in a small notebook, you knowMuletilla usada como marcador de vacilación, like a student. Once he spendError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “spent” a whole month reading about the railway in our region, because he wanted to know who planned it and how the workers lived. He also likes to talk to old neighbours because they remember many thingsFormulación básica; una expresión verbal más precisa como “recall how life used to be” puntuaría más alto from the past. I think he loves history because he wants to understand why the city and the country isError de concordancia: debería ser “are” like they are today. He says that ordinary people’s stories are more interestingComparativo básico; un adjetivo más fuerte como “more moving” puntuaría más alto than the names of kings. When we have lunch together, he often asks me what we learn at school, and he corrects me if I say wrong dateFalta el artículo y la elección de palabras no es la adecuada: debería ser “give the wrong date”. Last summer he takeError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “took” me to Wawel Castle, and I was surprised because he explained everything in a very nice wayExpresión básica y vaga; limita el Lexical Resource, erVacilación natural, muletilla leve, so the place felt alive. I admire him a lot, and now I also want to learn more about the past.

Band 7

I’d like to describe my grandfather Tomasz, who lives in Krakow in Poland. He’s a retired railway engineer, but his real passion is history, and he’s been interested in it since he was a boy. He learns about it in several ways. At home he has a whole shelf of books about kings, wars and ordinary people, and in the evenings he watches documentaries. At weekends he often goes to castles and museums, and he writes new facts in a small notebook, like a student preparing for an examComparación natural que da colorido. Once he spent a whole month reading about the railway built in our region, because he wanted to know who had planned it and how the workers lived. He also likes to talk to old neighbours because they remember things that never appear in books. I think he loves history because he wants to understand why the city and the country isError de concordancia: debería ser “are” the way they are today. He says that the stories of ordinary people are far more movingAdjetivo más fuerte que “interesting” than the names of kings. When we have lunch together, he often asks what we’ve been learning at school, and he corrects me gently if I get a date wrong. Last summer he took me to Wawel Castle, and I was surprised because he explained everything so vividly that the place felt as if it were aliveComparación irreal con el subjuntivo correcto “were”. I admire him a great deal, and to be honestMarcador discursivo natural que introduce un comentario personal, I now want to learn more about the past too.

Band 8

I’d like to describe my grandfather Tomasz, who lives in Krakow in Poland. He’s a retired railway engineer, but his real passion is history, which has fascinated him since he was a boy. He learns about it in several ways. At home he has a whole shelf of books about kings, wars and ordinary people, and in the evenings he watches documentaries. At weekends he often visits castles and museums, jotting new facts down in a small notebook like a student preparing for an examComparación natural que da colorido. Once he spent a whole month researching the railway built in our region, wanting to know who had planned it and how the workers had lived. He also loves talking to old neighbours, who remember things that never made it into books. I think he loves history because he wants to understand why the city and the country are the way they are today, and he says that the stories of ordinary people are far more moving than the names of kingsComparación paralela expresada con equilibrio y control. When we have lunch together he asks what we’ve been studying at school, and he corrects me gently whenever I get a date wrong, which happens more often than I’d like to admit. Last summer he took me to Wawel Castle, and what surprised me was how vividly he explained everything: the place came to lifeExpresión verbal idiomática usada con precisión in a way no guidebook could manage. I admire him enormously, and if I’m honestMarcador discursivo natural que introduce un comentario personal, he has made me curious about a subject that bored me at school.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices de concordancia y de tiempo verbal de Band 6 (“who live”, “he have”, “he take”) son correctos en Band 7 (“who lives”, “he has”, “he took”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
  • Band 6 usa “more interesting” y “in a very nice way”; Band 7 sube a “far more moving”; Band 8 cierra con “a subject that bored me at school”, que convierte la admiración en una declaración personal.
  • Band 6 escribe “he writes new facts in a small notebook, you know, like a student”; Band 7 ofrece una comparación ordenada con “like a student preparing for an exam”, y Band 8 condensa el hábito con “jotting new facts down”.

  • Responder a “why they love it” con “because it is interesting” y nada más concreto.

  1. Why do some people find history fascinating while others find it dull?¿Por qué algunas personas encuentran fascinante la historia y otras la encuentran aburrida?
  2. Is it more useful for young people to study history or modern subjects?¿Es más útil para los jóvenes estudiar historia o materias modernas?
  3. How can museums and historical sites make the past more interesting for children?¿Cómo pueden los museos y los sitios históricos hacer más interesante el pasado para los niños?
  4. Do you think people who know their country's history are more patriotic?¿Crees que quienes conocen la historia de su país son más patriotas?
  5. Can films and television series about the past be trusted to teach history?¿Se puede confiar en que las películas y series de televisión sobre el pasado enseñen historia?

Preguntas frecuentes
