How much does the IELTS exam cost?

IELTS has no single global fee: each country's test partner sets it in local currency. On 6 November 2026, IDP listed INR 19,000 in India, BDT 31,100 in Bangladesh and VND 4.664.000 in Vietnam for the regular test, and more for IELTS for UKVI. British Council centres publish their own fees, so check your centre before you book.

There is no worldwide IELTS price. The test is delivered in each country by IDP and by the British Council, and each sets the fee for its own centres in local currency. The figures below are the ones IDP published on its own country pages when we read them on 6 November 2026. Fees change, so the page you book on is the one that counts.

How each page names the regular test differs: Bangladesh and Malaysia list “IELTS on Computer”, Indonesia “IELTS Regular” and South Korea “IELTS”. Vietnam states that its fees include 8% VAT; the other pages say nothing about tax. Bangladesh gives the same fee in every city it lists.
Why the fee is not the same everywhere
The fee follows three things: the country, the partner that runs your centre, and the test you need. IELTS for UKVI, the version UK Visas and Immigration accepts, costs more than the regular test on every page above. IELTS Life Skills, which tests only speaking and listening, costs less on every page that lists it. Academic and General Training cost the same on the pages that list both. What can cost extra
The test fee is not the only charge on these pages. Moving your test date, cancelling and asking for a remark each have a fee. IDP India lists INR 4,750 to transfer IELTS on computer and INR 14,250 for an Enquiry on Results. IDP Malaysia keeps the full fee if you cancel or transfer with less than five weeks’ notice. Extra Test Report Forms can also be charged: IDP India sends the first five electronic copies free and charges ₹350 for each university after that.

What this means for your score
A candidate in Thailand who books IELTS Academic with IDP pays THB 8,860, while the same candidate needing a UK visa pays THB 9,750 for IELTS for UKVI. Knowing which test your university or visa asks for is the first step, because it decides the fee as well as the test.
Frequently asked questions
Is the IELTS fee the same for Academic and General Training?
On the IDP pages read on 6 November 2026, yes. India, Turkey and Thailand list the same fee for both, and Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea and Malaysia give one fee for the regular test. IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills have fees of their own, and so does One Skill Retake.
Do IDP and the British Council charge the same fee?
Each partner publishes its own fee for its own centres, so check the page of the centre you book with. This page lists only the fees we could read on an official IDP page on 6 November 2026; British Council fee pages could not be read for this page and are not quoted.
Can I get a refund if I cancel my IELTS test?
The rules are set per country and are on the same fee pages. IDP Malaysia, for example, charges RM 233 to cancel or transfer with five or more weeks' notice and keeps the full fee with less than five weeks' notice. Read your centre's terms before you pay, because the notice period matters more than the amount.
Does a retake of one section cost less?
Yes, where One Skill Retake is offered after IELTS on computer. IDP lists INR 12,650 in India, BDT 18,600 in Bangladesh, VND 2.940.000 in Vietnam, THB 5,150 in Thailand and KRW 218,610 in South Korea.
