Duolingo 150 to 155 to IELTS: what band is it?

Quick answer

Duolingo's scoring page relates a Duolingo English Test overall of 150 to 155 to IELTS 8. The table compares overall scores only, and it is Duolingo's own estimate: IELTS publishes no Duolingo table. Each institution decides which tests it accepts and at what score.

Part of The IELTS test, answered

Two Duolingo scores, 150 and 155, share one IELTS band on Duolingo’s table, and both are read here against band 8.

Where the row begins and ends

On the “Understand scoring” page, 150 and 155 relate to IELTS 8. The edges are close: 145, five points lower, is the top of the IELTS 7.5 row, and 160, the maximum, opens the row that covers IELTS 8.5 and 9 together. Duolingo says its comparisons are backed by its research; IELTS publishes no Duolingo comparison, so the row is the test owner’s estimate. The general answer has the full table.

The IELTS 8 descriptor

Band 8 is the very good user. On “IELTS and the CEFR”, overall bands 7 to 8 sit at C1, and band 8 is borderline between C1 and C2, so the framework itself does not give 8 a single level. The IELTS 8.0 answer covers the band in detail.

An average that lands on 8

Reading 8.5, Listening 8, Speaking 8 and Writing 7.5 add up to 32, an average of 8.0. Half a band either way in one section would move the average by only 0.125, so an overall 8 can come from quite different section profiles, which is why the overall comparison is all this table offers.

Reading the comparison with care

The table compares overall scores. It is not a promise that an institution will treat them as equal, and a requirement written with section minimums needs the sections checked separately. Each institution decides which tests it accepts and at what score, so read its own page. If a page asks for “IELTS 8” and you hold a Duolingo 150 or 155, the table shows you are in the matching row; it cannot say whether the page accepts Duolingo, nor whether it sets minimums for each subscore too.

Neighbouring rows

Moving up is Duolingo 160 for IELTS 8.5 to 9; moving down is Duolingo 140 and 145 for IELTS 7.5. The score converter shows other tests too.

What this means for your score

A requirement written as "IELTS 8 overall" and read against Duolingo's table points to 150 as the lowest score in the row. A 145 sits in the IELTS 7.5 row, and 160, the maximum, starts the row that covers IELTS 8.5 and 9.

Frequently asked questions

Does Duolingo 150 equal IELTS 8?

Duolingo's table relates 150 to 155 to IELTS 8. It is a comparison of overall scores published by Duolingo, not by IELTS, and a stated institutional requirement for Duolingo overrides it.

Can Duolingo replace IELTS for admission?

Only each institution can say. Neither test maker makes that choice, so check which tests the admissions, employer or visa page lists and what score it sets for each.

Which is harder, Duolingo or IELTS?

Neither test maker publishes a difficulty comparison, and Duolingo's table lines up scores rather than ranking the tests.

How are my section scores converted?

Duolingo's scoring page lists a comparable table for its four subscores against the IELTS section bands. This page covers overall scores; the IELTS overall is the four sections averaged to the nearest half band, as the band score calculator shows.
