What level is IELTS 8.0?
Quick answer
An overall 8.0 is band 8 on the IELTS nine-band scale, the "very good user", and IELTS aligns it with CEFR level C1, borderline with C2. IELTS places bands 7 to 8 at C1 and 8.5 to 9 at C2. The alignment covers the overall band only, not the four section scores.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
The question people type is usually “is 8.0 C1 or C2”. The short reply is that IELTS itself calls band 8 borderline, and the rest of this page shows where that comes from, from IELTS.org’s own pages read on 3 November 2026.
What band 8 means on the official scale
IELTS.org describes band 8 as the “very good user”: fully operational command of the language, with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. Band 8 handles complex, detailed argument well. Band 7 below it is the “good user”, with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings in some situations, and band 9 above it is the “expert user”, with fully operational command that is appropriate, accurate and fluent, with complete understanding. The full ladder is in what IELTS band scores mean; the step from 7 to 8 is covered in is a 7.5 score easy.
The CEFR level: C1, borderline C2
IELTS publishes its own alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference: overall bands 7 to 8 are C1, and 8.5 to 9 are C2. Band 8 is the top of the C1 range and IELTS notes it is borderline between C1 and C2. IELTS describes the framework as a reference tool rather than a precise equating, and the alignment refers to overall band scores, not to Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking separately. See IELTS band to CEFR level for the whole table. One band up, IELTS 8.5 is recognised as C2.
What an 8.0 opens
IELTS does not publish a list of what a band opens, and there is no pass mark. Every university, employer and immigration body sets its own required scores to meet its own needs, so the only reliable answer is on the page of the body you are applying to. Two details are worth reading there: whether the requirement is an overall band, a minimum in each of the four sections, or both, and whether they accept the kind of test you plan to sit. A requirement written as a CEFR level is less precise than one written as a band, so look for the band they name.
From 8.0 to 8.5
An overall 8.5 needs an average of at least 8.25 across the four sections, because an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band. Each section is a quarter of the average, so half a band gained in one section moves it by 0.125, and often two sections have to move. The band score calculator shows which one changes your rounded result. For the skill-by-skill picture, read how to get 8.5 in Speaking, Writing and Reading. How common an 8.5 is, in IELTS.org’s own data, is in how rare is 8.5 in IELTS.
What this means for your score
Listening 8.5, Reading 8.5, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.5 add up to 31.5, which averages 7.875. The overall band is the average rounded to the nearest half band, so 7.875 gives an overall 8.0. The same overall can come from a very even profile, such as 8.0 in all four sections.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 8.0 C1 or C2?
Both are defensible, which is why IELTS calls band 8 borderline. IELTS places overall bands 7 to 8 at C1 and 8.5 to 9 at C2, and notes that band 8 is borderline between C1 and C2. A requirement written as C2 is normally written as a band, most often 8.5, and that band is what counts.
Is 8.0 a good score in IELTS?
On the official scale, band 8 is a "very good user", the second highest band. Whether it is enough for a given purpose is set by the organisation you are applying to, because IELTS reports a band scale with no pass or fail.
What can I do with IELTS 8.0?
IELTS does not publish a list of what a band unlocks. Each university, employer and immigration body sets its own required scores, often an overall band plus a minimum in each section. Check the requirement on the page of the body you are applying to.
How do I go from 8.0 to 8.5?
The overall band is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band, so half a band gained in one section moves the average by only 0.125. Work out which section is easiest to lift with the band score calculator, and expect that two sections may need to move.
