  • who: older sister Achieng, pharmacist, Kisumu
  • habits: paper planner, phone calendar, bag packed at night, Sunday plan
  • situations: mother’s sixtieth birthday, her evening studies
  • why it matters: patients’ safety, less stress

Band 6

I would like to talk about my older sister Achieng, who liveError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “lives” in Kisumu. She works as a pharmacist in a hospital and she is also studying for a master’s degree in the evenings, so her days are, erVacilación natural, muletilla leve, very busy. To stay organised she uses a paper planner and a calendar on her phone, and every night she prepareError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “prepares” her bag and her clothes for the next day. On Sunday evening she sits down for ten minutes and plans the whole week. She also puts reminders on her phone for small things like paying bills or calling our parents. I notice this when our family plans something together. Last year our mother turned sixty, and Achieng makeError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “made” one page with the guest list, the food and the transport, so everything goError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “went” well on the day. I also notice it when she studies, because her notes isError de concordancia: debería ser “are” in different colours and she knows what she will read on each day. Sometimes her friends laugh at her because she is always early for everything, but she don’t mindError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “doesn’t mind”. Being organised is important to her because in a pharmacy a small mistake with a medicine can be very badVocabulario básico; limita el Lexical Resource for a patient. It also helps her to not have stressFormulación básica y poco natural; una expresión verbal precisa como “avoid panicking” puntuaría más alto when she is tired. Once I asked her how she does it, and she said that a plan takes ten minutes but it saves her many hours. You knowMuletilla usada como marcador de vacilación, I am not like her, I always do things at the last timeExpresión poco natural; la habitual es “at the last minute”, so I think she is a very goodAdjetivo básico; “admirable” mostraría más variedad example for me.

Band 7

I’d like to talk about my older sister Achieng, who lives in Kisumu. She works as a pharmacist in a hospital and she’s also studying for a master’s degree in the evenings, so her days are extremely busy. To stay organised she uses a paper planner and a calendar on her phone, and every night she packs her bag and lays out her clothes for the next day. On Sunday evening she sits down for ten minutes and plans the whole week. She also sets reminders on her phone for small things like paying bills or calling our parents. I notice this most when our family organises something together. Last year our mother turned sixty, and Achieng put the guest list, the food and the transport on one page, so everything went smoothly on the dayOración de resultado enlazada con precisión a la acción anterior. I also see it in the way she studies: her notes are colour-coded and she knows exactly what she’ll revise on every dayError de preposición: debería ser “revise each day” o “on each day”. Her friends sometimes tease her for always arriving early, but she doesn’t mind. Being organised matters to her because in a pharmacy a small mistake with a doseSintagma nominal preciso y propio del tema could seriously harm a patient. It also means she hardly ever has to panicEnlace natural con la razón when she’s tired. When I asked her how she does it, she said that a plan takes ten minutes but saves her hours. Honestly, I’m not like her, I usually leave things until the last minute, so she’s a real example for me of how much calmer life can be.

Band 8

I’d like to talk about my older sister Achieng, who lives in Kisumu and is easily the most organised person I know. She works as a pharmacist in a hospital and is studying part time for a master’s degree, so her days are tightly packed. To keep on top of everything she uses a paper planner and a phone calendar, and every night she packs her bag and lays out her clothes for the following day. Every Sunday evening she sits down for ten minutes and maps out the whole week. She even sets phone reminders for small things such as paying bills or calling our parents. I notice this most whenever the family organises something together. When our mother turned sixty, Achieng put the guest list, the food and the transport on a single page, and nothing went wrong on the day, whereas I would probably have forgotten the cakeOración contrastiva con un condicional que da personalidad. I also see it in the way she studies: her notes are colour-coded and she knows exactly what she’ll revise each day. Her friends tease her for turning up early everywherePhrasal verb natural e informal con un sentido preciso, yet she takes it as a compliment. Being organised matters to her because in a pharmacy a small mistake with a doseSintagma nominal preciso y propio del tema could seriously harm a patient, and being methodical is part of being responsibleVínculo abstracto entre el hábito y el carácter. It also spares her the panic that comes from rushingExplicación natural y flexible del beneficio personal. When I once asked her how she does it, she laughed and said that a plan takes ten minutes but saves hours. Honestly, I find it both inspiring and slightly intimidating, and I’m slowly borrowing a few of her habits.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices de Band 6 (“who live”, “she prepare”, “Achieng make”) son correctos en Band 7 (“who lives”, “she packs”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8, donde “easily the most organised person I know” abre la respuesta con más variedad.
  • Band 6 se apoya en “very bad” y “very good”; Band 7 afina la razón con “a small mistake with a dose”; Band 8 añade “being methodical is part of being responsible” para conectar el hábito con el carácter de la persona.
  • Band 6 se detiene después de la historia de la fiesta (“everything go well on the day”); Band 8 añade un contraste con “I would probably have forgotten the cake” y cierra con una reacción personal: “both inspiring and slightly intimidating”.

  1. Do you think people are born organised, or is it a skill that can be learned?¿Crees que las personas nacen organizadas o que es una habilidad que se puede aprender?
  2. Why do some people find it so hard to plan their time well?¿Por qué a algunas personas les cuesta tanto planificar bien su tiempo?
  3. Which jobs depend most on being well organised, and why?¿Qué trabajos dependen más de estar bien organizado y por qué?
  4. Has technology made it easier to stay organised, or does it just add more distractions?¿La tecnología ha facilitado mantenerse organizado o solo añade más distracciones?
  5. Is it a good idea to teach children to plan their day from an early age?¿Es buena idea enseñar a los niños a planificar su día desde pequeños?

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Y si a mí me cuesta organizarme?

Una causa y un resultado, por ejemplo “she has little spare time, so planning stops her from panicking”, suenan mucho más convincentes que “it is a good quality”.
