What level is IELTS 9.0?
Quick answer
An overall 9.0 is band 9 on the IELTS nine-band scale, the "expert user", and IELTS aligns it with CEFR level C2, the highest level. IELTS places overall bands 8.5 to 9 at C2. Band 9 is the top of the scale, so no higher band exists.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
Band 9 is the end of the IELTS scale, so the question is less “what comes next” than “what exactly does the top band say”. The answers below come from IELTS.org’s own pages, read on 3 November 2026.
What band 9 means on the official scale
IELTS.org describes band 9 as the “expert user”: fully operational command of the language, appropriate, accurate and fluent, with complete understanding. Band 8 below it is the “very good user”, with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. The scale runs from band 9 down to band 1, the non-user, and how many bands IELTS has counts every score you can be given. The whole ladder is in what IELTS band scores mean.
The CEFR level: C2
IELTS’s own alignment places overall bands 8.5 to 9 at C2, the highest level of the Common European Framework of Reference. IELTS describes the framework as a reference tool rather than a precise equating, and says the alignment refers to overall band scores, not to Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking separately. See IELTS band to CEFR level for the full table. The band just below, IELTS 8.5, is also C2.
What a 9.0 opens
There is no pass mark in IELTS, and every university, employer and immigration body sets its own required scores. A requirement is a minimum, so a 9.0 meets any IELTS requirement on the scale, but whether the body accepts the test and which sections it checks are set on its own page. Read that page rather than a general list. IELTS publishes no statement of what the top band unlocks beyond the descriptor above.
Reaching an overall 9.0
The overall band is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band, with an average ending in .75 rounded up to the next whole band. An overall 9.0 therefore starts at an average of 8.75, and the section scores are not all required to be 9.0, as the worked example on this page shows. Each section is a quarter of the average, so half a band in one section moves it by 0.125. Put your own four scores into the band score calculator to see which section matters most. How rare an 8.5 is, in IELTS.org’s published data, shows how common the band just below is.
What this means for your score
Listening 9.0, Reading 9.0, Writing 8.0 and Speaking 9.0 add up to 35.0, which averages 8.75. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so the overall band is 9.0. With Writing at 7.5 the average is 8.625, which rounds down to 8.5.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 9.0 C2?
Yes. IELTS places overall bands 8.5 to 9 at C2, the highest CEFR level, so 9.0 is C2. The alignment refers to overall band scores, not to the four sections.
Is 9.0 a good score in IELTS?
It is the top band on the official scale, described as the "expert user". Whether any score is enough for a given purpose is for the organisation you are applying to, because IELTS has no pass or fail.
What can I do with IELTS 9.0?
IELTS does not publish a list of what a band opens. Each university, employer and immigration body sets its own required scores, so the answer is on the page of the body you are applying to. A requirement is a minimum, and a higher score does not change it.
How do I go from 8.5 to 9.0?
An overall 9.0 needs an average of at least 8.75 across the four sections, because an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Use the band score calculator to see which of your four sections would change the rounded result.
