What level is IELTS 5.0?
Quick answer
IELTS 5.0 is the modest user band on the nine-band scale, and on IELTS's own alignment with the CEFR it is borderline between B1 and B2. The scale describes partial command: the candidate copes with overall meaning in most situations but is likely to make many mistakes. The alignment covers the overall band, not the section scores.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
Two questions sit inside “what level is IELTS 5.0”: what the band means on the IELTS scale, and which CEFR level it matches. Both are published by IELTS, and both come with a limit worth knowing before you plan around them.
What 5.0 means on the IELTS scale
Band 5 is the modest user level. The official description is partial command of the language: the candidate copes with overall meaning in most situations, is likely to make many mistakes, and can handle basic communication in their own field. Band 4 below it is the limited user, with basic competence limited to familiar situations. Band 6 above it is the competent user, with effective command despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings.
The descriptions are written for whole bands. A 5.0 is the whole band itself, so the modest user description is the one that applies. For the full ladder, see what the IELTS band scores mean.
The CEFR level of IELTS 5.0
IELTS publishes its own alignment with the CEFR, on its page “IELTS and the CEFR”. Overall bands 4 to 5 are placed at B1 and 5.5 to 6.5 at B2, and band 5 is marked as borderline between B1 and B2. So 5.0 sits between two levels, which is the opposite of a clean answer. IELTS says the alignment refers to overall band scores, not to the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, so a Writing 5.0 is not “B1 or B2 in Writing” on any IELTS page. The band to CEFR answer shows the whole table.
What a 5.0 opens
The only true answer is that it depends on the receiving body. IELTS has no pass mark, and every university, employer and immigration body sets its own required scores. The kind of requirement to look for is an overall band, a minimum in each of the four sections, or both, and the second form is stricter than it looks. IELTS.org’s guidance to organisations is to choose an entry score that suits their own programme, so the figure that matters is on the page of the place you are applying to, not on this one. See what is a good IELTS score.
The gap to 5.5
The next half band, IELTS 5.5, is the first band IELTS places fully at B2. The overall band is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band, so each section is a quarter of the result. Check how your four scores average in the band score calculator, then see which skill is easiest to lift: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. The overall score answer explains why half a band in one section often changes nothing.
What this means for your score
Listening 5.5, Reading 5.5, Writing 4.5 and Speaking 5.0 add up to 20.5. Divided by four that is 5.125, and the overall band is the average rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 and .75 rounding up, so it is 5.0. Writing at 4.5 does not stop an overall 5.0 here, because the other three sections carry the average.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 5.0 B1 or B2?
Borderline between the two. IELTS places overall bands 4 to 5 at B1 and 5.5 to 6.5 at B2, and marks band 5 as borderline between B1 and B2. A requirement written as B2 is normally written as a band as well, so the band is what counts.
Is 5.0 a good score in IELTS?
The scale calls band 5 a modest user, with partial command of the language. Whether that is enough depends on the organisation you are applying to, because IELTS has no pass mark and each institution sets its own required scores.
What can I do with IELTS 5.0?
Only the body that receives the score can say. Universities, employers and immigration bodies each set their own requirement, often as an overall band plus a minimum in each section. Check the exact wording on their own admissions or visa page.
How do I go from 5.0 to 5.5?
Your overall moves when the average of the four sections crosses a rounding point, and half a band in one section moves the average by only 0.125. Work out which section is easiest to lift with the band score calculator, and expect that two sections may need to move.
