Duolingo 130 to 135 to IELTS: what band is it?

Quick answer

Duolingo's scoring page relates a Duolingo English Test overall of 130 to 135 to IELTS 7. The table compares overall scores only, and it is Duolingo's own estimate: IELTS publishes no Duolingo table. Each institution decides which tests it accepts and at what score.

Part of The IELTS test, answered

IELTS 7 is the band that many requirements name, and Duolingo’s table gives it two scores: 130 and 135.

The Duolingo side

Duolingo’s “Understand scoring” page puts an overall of 130 or 135 in the row it relates to IELTS 7. One step below, 125, belongs to the IELTS 6.5 row; one step above the row, 140 opens IELTS 7.5. Duolingo presents these as comparisons backed by its research. IELTS publishes no table for the Duolingo English Test, which makes this the test owner’s reading of the scale and not an IELTS ruling. The general answer lists the rest.

What IELTS says band 7 is

Band 7 is the good user: operational command of the language, with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings in some situations. IELTS places 7 as the first overall band at C1 in “IELTS and the CEFR”. Whether that is a good score for your goal is covered in is band 7 good.

Four sections, one overall of 7

Speaking 7, Writing 6.5, Listening 7.5 and Reading 7 give 28 in total, and 28 over four is 7.0. A single weaker section does not decide the overall by itself, but a requirement that also sets a floor for each section may.

The limits of a table

Overall scores are compared, and nothing more. No table obliges an institution to treat Duolingo 130 as IELTS 7. Each institution decides which tests it accepts and at what score, so read its own page. If a page asks for “IELTS 7” and you hold a Duolingo 130 or 135, the table shows you are in the matching row; it cannot tell you whether the page takes Duolingo at all, nor whether subscore minimums apply on top of the overall.

Where to look next

The step up is Duolingo 140 and 145 for IELTS 7.5 and the step down is Duolingo 120 and 125 for IELTS 6.5. The score converter covers more tests.

What this means for your score

A requirement written as "IELTS 7 overall" and read against Duolingo's table points to 130 as the lowest score in the row. A 125 sits in the IELTS 6.5 row, and 140 starts the IELTS 7.5 row.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Duolingo score of 130 the same as IELTS 7?

On Duolingo's table, 130 to 135 relate to IELTS 7. The comparison comes from Duolingo and covers overall scores only; where an institution states its own Duolingo requirement, that is the figure to use.

Will universities take Duolingo in the place of IELTS?

Each institution decides, not the test makers. Read the page you are applying through for the tests it lists and the scores it asks for.

Is it easier to get a good score on Duolingo than on IELTS?

Neither test maker publishes a difficulty comparison. Duolingo's table matches scores to bands and makes no claim about which test is harder.

What about section scores?

Duolingo's scoring page has a similar comparison of its four subscores with IELTS section bands. The table here covers overall scores; the IELTS overall averages four sections to the nearest half band, and the band score calculator does the sum.
