IELTS Ready vs IELTS by IDP, and a third option (2026)
Quick answer
IELTS Ready is the British Council's web platform, described as scored practice tests, personalised AI feedback, courses and expert support; IELTS by IDP is IDP's companion app for IELTS preparation, booking and results, with an English self-assessment and sample Listening and Reading tests. The difference that decides between them is practice and courses on the web versus booking, results and a checklist in an app. A third option, which is not an official product, is set beside them at the end.
Full tests in all four skills: the three-part Speaking test with the AI examiner, both Writing tasks, a full Academic Reading paper and a four-part Listening test, each marked when you finish.

IELTS Ready and IELTS by IDP are weighed against each other because they come from the two organisations that deliver the test, and people expect that whichever they pick will be the closer to the real thing. They are not the same kind of product: one is a web platform for practice and courses, the other an app for the steps around the test. This page sets them side by side using only what each says about itself, with the dates we read it.
We make IELTS Mentor AI, the third option at the end of this page. Every fact about IELTS Ready and IELTS by IDP below comes from their own sites or store listings, quoted with the date; check their current pages before you decide.
Key takeaways
- IELTS Ready is a web platform with scored practice tests, AI feedback and courses; IELTS by IDP is a companion app for preparation, booking and results, with sample Listening and Reading tests.
- IELTS Ready mentions scores in all four skills in its full mock test; IDP’s listing describes auto-marked feedback only for Listening and Reading and only through a partnership available in India.
- The third option is not an official product: it offers practice in all four skills in a paid app, and no booking or results.
- None of the three scores is an official IELTS result; nothing here is a test of any product.
What IELTS Ready says it is
British Council’s IELTS Ready page, recorded on 18 September 2026, describes “Scored practice tests, personalised AI feedback, courses and expert support”, and “IELTS Coach online or in-person courses in our teaching centres”. It is a web platform at takeielts.britishcouncil.org. We found no mobile app under the name: no app called IELTS Ready on the App Store, and none on Google Play. British Council’s own app “British Council English” mentions IELTS Coach courses but is a general English course app, not an IELTS-specific one, and a third party’s app called IELTS Flex, which claims to reuse IELTS Ready’s content, is that company’s product.
Its comparison table lists a mock test giving estimated four-skill scores with AI feedback and a full mock test giving Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking scores, with model answers for Reading and Listening. Short and full courses exist across all four skills. The page mentions expert support and live webinars without saying whether feedback is delivered by people or automatically, and it does not describe the Speaking test’s three parts.
What IELTS by IDP says it is
IELTS by IDP is, on its App Store listing, “for IELTS preparation, booking, and results”. The listing, recorded on 18 September 2026, says “Take the English Self-Assessment to evaluate your current level and focus on areas for improvement” and “Access sample Listening and Reading tests with auto-marked, AI-enabled feedback”. The seller is IDP Education Ltd. The listing was not available on the US or UK App Store lookups that day, so we read the Australian and Indian storefronts: 4.38 from 176 ratings in Australia and 4.30 from 201 in India.
Who makes it is stated in its own words: “IDP is a proud co-owner of the IELTS test and delivers the test through our network of custom-built test centres in more than 150 countries.” The auto-marked Listening and Reading feedback is described there for IDP’s Cambridge partnership, which is available in India only. We found no description of AI-scored Speaking or Writing feedback in the listing.
Where the two differ
What each is for. IELTS Ready is for practice and learning: scored tests, feedback and courses, run by the British Council’s teaching centres and online. IELTS by IDP is for the steps around the test: a checklist-style preparation path, a self-assessment, booking and results, with sample tests as one part. The first fits repeated practice and teaching; the second fits managing the booking and seeing the result.
Where it runs. IELTS Ready is a website; there is no app under its name, though its courses can be taken in person at teaching centres. IELTS by IDP is an app, and on 18 September 2026 it was listed on the Australian and Indian App Store, not the US or UK one.
What is scored, and how. IELTS Ready says its mock tests give estimated scores for all four skills and its full mock returns Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking scores. IDP’s listing describes auto-marked feedback on sample Listening and Reading tests only, and only through its India-only partnership. On the test, Writing and Speaking are reported as a whole or half band, so an automated score for them is an estimate.
Speaking and Writing feedback. IELTS Ready mentions personalised AI feedback and Writing and Speaking scores in its full mock; its page gives no detail on whether the feedback explains individual mistakes, and we found no claim about the Speaking test’s three-part structure. IDP’s listing describes no Speaking or Writing feedback at all, for AI or otherwise. Neither page, as recorded, tells you which Writing or Speaking criteria the feedback is marked against.
Who makes it. IDP says in the listing quoted above that it is “a proud co-owner of the IELTS test”. The British Council page we recorded is hosted on its own takeielts domain; the entry we hold quotes no co-ownership wording, so this page does not put one in its mouth. Co-owning the test does not make a practice score an official result: only the IELTS test itself produces one.

What AI assistants say when asked
We check four AI assistants every week with the same questions. On 2 October 2026, across 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools, IELTS Ready (British Council) was named in 22 and was the first name given in 11; IELTS by IDP was named in 8 and was first in 2. Our app was named in 2 and cited as a source in 16. The questions were about Speaking. They tell you which pages the assistants had read, not which product serves a candidate better, and are not a test of any of the three.
Choose IELTS Ready if
- You want scored practice tests across the four skills, with AI feedback, on a website.
- You want courses with expert support, online or in a teaching centre, as its page describes.
- You prefer a platform from the British Council to a stand-alone app.
Choose IELTS by IDP if
- You want to book the test, keep a preparation checklist and see your results in one app.
- You want an English self-assessment to find where to focus first.
- You are in India and want the auto-marked sample Listening and Reading tests its listing describes.
The third option: IELTS Mentor AI
IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next.
It is not an official product, and it is not affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge. It offers no booking and no results, and it does not replace the test or a teacher.
By the rows above, it describes what neither page does for Speaking and Writing: a band for each of the four criteria as a range from strict to lenient, with the sentences that moved each band, and a record across every test in the Skill Map, with recurring errors named as Blocking Issues. Reading and Listening are full papers under exam timing in the app on both stores. It lacks what each of them has: no courses or live expert support, no booking, no results, no web platform, and an interface in English only.
Choose IELTS Mentor AI if
- You want Speaking and Writing marked on the four criteria, and Reading and Listening as full timed papers, in one app.
- You want a band range per criterion rather than one number, and your recurring errors named.
- You have already booked, or will book elsewhere, and want to spend the time before the test practising.
Try before you decide
All three products score inside the product. What you can do first, without any of them, is sit the browser tests on this site: the Speaking mock test runs Parts 1 to 3 at the real timings, the Reading practice test has three Academic passages and 40 questions marked the moment you submit, and the Listening practice test has four parts and 40 questions read by your browser’s own voices. Only the full Reading and Listening sittings show a band, an indicative one, and the Speaking mock shows none. What the app adds is described on the mock test product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS Ready a mobile app?
Not under that name. IELTS Ready is a web platform; when we checked on 18 September 2026 no app called IELTS Ready was on the App Store, and Google Play showed no British Council app of that name. A separate app called IELTS Flex, by Guided e-Learning, is a third party's product, not British Council's.
What does IELTS by IDP do?
Its App Store description, recorded on 18 September 2026, calls it an app for "IELTS preparation, booking, and results", with an English self-assessment and sample Listening and Reading tests. It was not listed on the US or UK App Store lookups that day; we read the Australian and Indian storefronts instead.
Do either of them give feedback on Speaking and Writing?
IELTS Ready's page mentions Writing and Speaking scores and personalised AI feedback in its full mock test; it does not describe the Speaking test's three parts. IDP's listing describes auto-marked, AI-enabled feedback for sample Listening and Reading tests under its India-only Cambridge partnership, and does not describe AI-scored Speaking or Writing.
Which one gives a real IELTS band?
Neither. Practice scores from IELTS Ready, IELTS by IDP or any other product are not an official IELTS result; only the test gives one. Speaking and Writing on the test are reported as a whole or half band.
Do AI assistants recommend one over the other?
In our check of four assistants on 2 October 2026, IELTS Ready (British Council) was named in 22 of 180 answers to buying questions about IELTS Speaking apps and tools and was the first name in 11; IELTS by IDP was named in 8 and first in 2. That reflects which pages the assistants had read, not a test of either product.
