| to eat my words | নিজের বলা কথা ভুল ছিল বলে স্বীকার করা | I had to eat my words in front of my friends. |
| open-minded | ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ধারণা শুনতে রাজি | I try to be more open-minded these days. |
| to judge a book by its cover | শুধু বাইরের চেহারা দেখে মত তৈরি করা | It taught me not to judge a book by its cover. |

- opinion: Mwila, classmate, proud and unfriendly
- when: second year, March, university in Lusaka
- why changed: pair presentation, notes, late library evenings, shy not proud

Band 6
I would like to talk about a time when I changed my opinion about a classmate called Mwila. I amটেন্সের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “was” in my second year at the university in Lusaka, in Zambia, and Mwila was in my department, so we had many lessons together. Before that, I thought he was very proudসাধারণ বিশেষণ; Lexical Resource-এর স্কোর আটকে রাখে because he never talked to anybody and he always sat alone at the back. I, erস্বাভাবিক থেমে ভাবার চিহ্ন, সামান্য ফিলার, never tried to speak to him, and I told my friends he thinkটেন্সের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “thought” he was better than us. Then in March our lecturer put us in a pair for a presentation, and I was not happy about it. In the first meeting he didn’t saidরূপের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “didn’t say” much, but he brought notes that were very clear and he explainটেন্সের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “explained” the difficult parts to me. He stayed in the library until late with me to practise the slides. Then I understood that he was not proud, he was just very shyসাধারণ বিশেষণ; Lexical Resource-এর স্কোর আটকে রাখে and he did not know how to start a conversation. So I changed my mind, because I saw his behaviour and not only my first idea. I felt embarrassed because I judged him too fast, you knowইতস্তত ভাব বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত ফিলার বাক্যাংশ, and also happy because I found a good friend. Now we isকর্তা ও ক্রিয়ার অমিল: সঠিক হবে “are” close friends and we study together every week. Now I try to wait before I decide about people, because Mwila showed me that the first idea can be wrong. He is also very funny when you know him.
Band 7
I’d like to talk about a time when I changed my opinion about a classmate called Mwila. I was in my second year at the university in Lusaka, in Zambia, and Mwila was in my department, so we shared several lessons. At first I thought he was stuck-upঅনানুষ্ঠানিক, কিন্তু অহংকারী মানুষের জন্য যথাযথ শব্দ, because he never talked to anybody and always sat alone at the back. I never tried to speak to him, and I told my friends he thinkটেন্সের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “he thought” he was better than the rest of us. Then in March our lecturer put us in a pair for a presentation, and I wasn’t thrilled. In our first meeting he said very little, but he’d brought notes that were really clear, and he patiently explained the parts I hadn’t understoodrelative clause-এ (আপেক্ষিক উপবাক্য) past perfect-এর নির্ভুল ব্যবহার. He even stayed in the library until late to practise the slides with me. That’s when I realised he wasn’t proud at all, he was simply very reservedবাক্যের মাঝখানে স্বাভাবিকভাবে নিজেকে শুধরে নেওয়া and had no idea how to start a conversation. So I had a change of heartমত বদলানো বোঝানোর বাগধারাসুলভ বাক্যাংশ, because I’d seen his behaviour with my own eyes. I felt embarrassed ofপ্রিপজিশনের ভুল: সঠিক হবে “embarrassed about” judging him so quickly, but also glad that I’d made a good friend. We’re close now, and we study together every week. I try to wait before deciding anything about someone these days, because Mwila showed me how wrong a first idea can be. He’s also hilarious once you know him.
Band 8
I’d like to talk about a time when I changed my opinion about a classmate called Mwila. I was in my second year at the university in Lusaka, in Zambia, and Mwila was in my department, where we shared most of our lectures. At first I took him for an arrogant person, since he never spoke to anyone and always sat alone at the back, and rather than make an effort to talk to him, I told my friends that he thought he was better than the rest of usreported speech-সহ নির্ভুল বৈপরীত্যমূলক গঠন. Then in March our lecturer paired us for a presentation, which I wasn’t looking forward to. In our first meeting he said very little, but he’d prepared notes that were remarkably clear, and he patiently went over everything I hadn’t grasped. He even stayed in the library until late to rehearse the slides with me. That was when it dawned on meউপলব্ধির মুহূর্ত বোঝানোর স্বাভাবিক discourse marker (বক্তব্যের গতিপথ বোঝানো শব্দ) that he wasn’t arrogant at all, merely reservedযথাযথ শব্দ বাছাই, and simply had no idea how to start a conversation. I had to eat my wordsভুল স্বীকার করা বোঝানোর বাগধারাসুলভ বাক্যাংশ in front of my friends. I felt embarrassed that I’d jumped to conclusionsতাড়াতাড়ি বিচার করা বোঝানোর যথাযথ বাগধারা, but mostly glad, because I’d gained a good friend. We study together every week now, and he has turned out to be remarkably funny once you know him. These days I try to hold back from judging people until I’ve seen how they actgerund
- ব্যান্ড 6-এর টেন্সের ভুলগুলো (“I am in my second year”, “he think he was better than us”) ব্যান্ড 7-এ নির্ভুল past form হয়ে যায় (“I was in my second year”) এবং ব্যান্ড 8-এও নির্ভুলই থাকে।
- ব্যান্ড 6 নির্ভর করে “very proud” ও “very shy”-এর ওপর; ব্যান্ড 7 ব্যবহার করে “stuck-up” ও “had a change of heart”; ব্যান্ড 8 যোগ করে “merely reserved” ও “jumped to conclusions”।
- ব্যান্ড 6 বর্তমানকে বর্ণনা করে শুধু “we study together every week” দিয়ে; ব্যান্ড 8 শেষ করে বক্তা এখন কী আলাদাভাবে করেন সেই কথায়: “hold back from judging people until I’ve seen how they act”।
- শেষ লাইন “how you felt about it” ভুলে যাওয়া, বা শুধু “I felt good” বলে সেটির উত্তর দেওয়া।
- Why do many people find it hard to admit that they were wrong?
- How reliable do you think first impressions are?
- Is changing your opinion a sign of strength or a sign of weakness?
- Does social media make people more or less willing to change their views?
- Should schools teach students to question their own opinions?
