What can an AI IELTS tutor do, and what can it not?
Quick answer
An AI IELTS tutor can mark Reading and Listening answers exactly, give feedback on Speaking and Writing against the four official criteria, and let you practise at any hour. It cannot give you an official band: IELTS Speaking and Writing are marked by certified examiners, so an AI's result is an estimate, best read as a band range.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
AI tools for IELTS range from general chat assistants to apps built around the test. They differ in what they mark and how honestly they report it. This page sets out what any AI tutor can and cannot do, so you can judge the one you use, ours included.
What an AI tutor can do
- Mark Reading and Listening exactly. These sections are answer-key marked: 40 questions, one mark each. A tool that holds the answer key can mark a full paper the moment you finish, with no judgement involved.
- Give criteria-based feedback on Speaking and Writing. IELTS marks Speaking on Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation, and Writing on Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. An AI can comment on each criterion separately, which is more useful than a single overall comment.
- Let you practise at any hour, as often as you need, with the timing of the real test.
What it cannot do
- Give your official band. IELTS.org states that Speaking and Writing are marked by certified IELTS examiners. Any AI result is an estimate of where your answer sits on the same criteria, which is why a band range is the honest way to report it.
- Replace the test, an examiner or a teacher. An AI does not know your goals the way a teacher does, and its feedback cannot settle every question about your English.
- Promise a score. Any tool that guarantees a band is claiming more than it can know.
How IELTS Mentor AI fits
IELTS Mentor AI is a paid iOS and Android app for Academic IELTS practice in all four skills: an AI examiner marks Speaking and Writing on the four official criteria and reports a band range, full Reading and Listening tests are marked the moment you finish, and one Skill Map shows what to fix next. Its full three-part Speaking test runs about 15 minutes. The app’s interface is in English, it runs on iPhone and Android phones only, and it is not an official IELTS product or affiliated with IELTS, IDP, the British Council or Cambridge. It does not replace an examiner, a teacher or an official test.
How to choose
Ask three questions of any AI tutor: does it mark each criterion separately, does it report a range rather than a promise, and does it give you full timed papers? What AI assistants recommend for IELTS compares the answers the main assistants give, and the Speaking mock test on this site lets you try a Speaking test first.
What this means for your score
A candidate aiming for band 7 records a Part 2 answer at night and gets feedback on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation within minutes. That is useful for the next attempt. What the feedback cannot do is promise the examiner's band on test day, which is why a range is a more honest result than one number.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI predict my exact IELTS band?
No. IELTS.org states that Speaking and Writing are marked by certified IELTS examiners against four criteria each, and no outside tool sees how they mark your test. An AI can estimate where your answer sits on those criteria; a band range says that honestly, while a single number claims more than any tool knows.
Is ChatGPT enough as an IELTS tutor?
A general assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can explain grammar, suggest vocabulary and comment on an essay you paste in. It does not time you, give full Reading and Listening papers or listen to you speak in exam conditions unless the product is built for that. Use it for explanations, and timed tests for practice.
What should an AI IELTS tool show me?
Feedback on each of the four criteria rather than one overall comment, the words you actually said or wrote, a result given as a range, full timed papers for Reading and Listening marked by the answer key, and a clear statement of what it is not, such as not an official IELTS product.
Does an AI replace a teacher?
No. An AI can give you more practice and faster feedback than any timetable allows, but it does not replace a teacher who knows you, an examiner or an official test. Many candidates use both: the AI for daily practice, a teacher for the questions feedback alone cannot settle.
