시험관은 재료와 결과물에 대한 묘사 어휘, 관계절(“a man who makes”, “chairs that last”), 그리고 “it is difficult”보다 깊이 있는 설명을 듣습니다.
|---|---|---|
| handmade | 기계가 아니라 사람이 도구로 만든 | Everything in his workshop is handmade. |
| craftsmanship | 물건을 만들 때 드러나는 높은 기술 | The craftsmanship in that chair is remarkable. |

| to be built to last | 쉽게 닳지 않을 만큼 튼튼하게 만들어지다 | His furniture is built to last for decades. |
| mass-produced | 기계로 대량 생산된 | I prefer a handmade chair to a mass-produced one. |
| a labour of love | 좋아서 정성껏 하는 일 | Each toy is a labour of love. |
| to take pride in something | 자기 작업의 품질에 만족과 자부심을 느끼다 | He takes great pride in every piece. |
| to be good with your hands | 손으로 하는 실용적인 일에 능숙하다 | My neighbour has always been good with his hands. |
| to turn something into something | 어떤 것을 다른 것으로 바꾸다 | He can turn a plain plank into a beautiful stool. |

Band 7
I’d like to talk about my neighbour, Seu Antonio, who’s extremely good at making things from wood. He’s a retired carpenter and he lives next door to my family in Curitiba, in Brazil. I’ve known him since I was a small child, because I used to sit outside his workshop and watch him work반복된 과거의 습관을 나타내는 “used to”를 정확하게 사용. He makes wooden chairs, small toys for the children in our street, and once he built a bookshelf for my mother, which we still have in our living room. He learned the work from his father when he was a teenager, and last Christmas he made a small wooden train for my little brother, who still sleeps with it. What I remember most is the smell of the wood and the sound of his tools, and sometimes he let me hold the sandpaper, and he was always meticulous about every piece자연스러운 전치사와 함께 쓴 정확한 형용사. He doesn’t use machines for the small parts, and he sands each toy until it’s smooth like silk전치사 오류: 올바른 형태는 “smooth as silk”. I admire this skill for a few reasons. Firstly, it takes enormous patience, which I am lacking부자연스러운 표현: “I lack”이나 “I don’t have”가 더 관용적임. Secondly, what he makes is built to last자연스러운 정형 표현, unlike the cheap things you find in a big shop. Band 8

I’ve known him since I was small, because I used to sit outside his workshop for hours, watching him work. He makes wooden chairs and small toys for the children in our street, and he once built a bookshelf for my mother that still stands in our living room. He learned the work from his father when he was a teenager, and last Christmas he made a small wooden train for my little brother, who still sleeps with it. What I remember most is the smell of fresh wood and the sound of his tools, and sometimes he let me hold the sandpaper, and he was always meticulous about every piece자연스러운 전치사와 함께 쓴 정확한 형용사. He doesn’t use machines for the delicate parts, and he sands each toy until it’s smooth as silk자연스러운 직유를 정확하게 사용. I admire the skill for several reasons. Firstly, it demands a kind of patience that I have yet to develop아직 이루지 못한 것을 나타내는 자연스러운 구조. Secondly, what he makes is built to last자연스러운 정형 표현, whereas the things you buy in a big shop tend to wear out. Above all, he doesn’t keep the knowledge to himself재귀대명사가 있는 부정문을 자연스럽게 사용: he teaches local children to make a small boat, which strikes me as the best way of keeping an old craft alive. I’m hoping to learn it from him one day.

- “how you know them” 항목을 잊거나 짧은 구절 하나로만 언급하는 것
- Why are handmade products often valued more highly than factory-made ones?
- Do you think traditional crafts will survive in the future?
- Should schools teach children practical crafts such as sewing or woodwork?
- Is making things by hand mainly a hobby or a job nowadays?
- What can people gain from learning a craft later in life?
