Un candidato que dice “I disliked it because I was worried about losing my sister, and the noise gave me a headache” suena mucho más convincente que uno que dice “it was not good”.

Band 7

I’d like to talk about a really crowded place I went to last December, Balogun Market in Lagos. I went on a Saturday morning with my younger sister Chidinma, who needed an outfit for a family wedding. By the time we arrived, the lanes were so packed that we could only shuffle alongLocución verbal natural y precisa para moverse entre la multitud with everyone else. Sellers were calling out to customers, shoppers were bargaining loudly, and every few minutes a motorbike squeezeError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “squeezed” past between the stalls. We stopped twice to catch our breath in a doorway, and a man carrying a huge bundle of cloth on his head shouted at everybody to make way. I kept hold of my sister’s hand because I was afraid we’d get separated. Most people were there to buy or sell somethingOración clara y correcta que responde al tercer punto, though some were simply wandering around and taking it all in. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy it much. It was far too noisy, the air was stifling, and I had a headache within an hour. Still, my sister was delightedEl marcador de contraste mantiene la coherencia del relato because she found exactly the dress she wanted, and that made the trip worthwhile. Afterwards we had a cold drink in a small cafe outside the market, and the quiet there felt wonderful. I think I disliked it mainly because I prefer quiet places, although I can understand why so many people is attractedError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “are attracted” to a market that’s so full of energy.

Band 8

I’d like to talk about a market I visited last December, Balogun Market in Lagos, which is easily the most crowded place I’ve ever been to. I went on a Saturday morning with my younger sister Chidinma, who needed an outfit for a family wedding. By the time we arrived, the lanes were so packed that all we could do was let the crowd carry us alongExpresión idiomática y vívida para moverse entre la multitud. Sellers were calling out to passers-by, shoppers were haggling at the top of their voices, and every few minutes a motorbike squeezed through the gaps between the stalls. We had to stop twice to catch our breath in a doorway, and a man balancing a huge bundle of cloth on his head barked at everybody to make way. I kept hold of my sister’s hand for fear of getting separated. Although most people were simply there to buy or sell, others were wandering about and soaking it all inEstructura concesiva usada con precisión y naturalidad. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy it. The noise was relentless, the air was stifling, and within an hour I had a pounding headache. That saidMarcador discursivo que introduce una visión equilibrada, my sister was delighted to find exactly the dress she’d been looking for, which made the trip worthwhile. Afterwards we had a cold drink at a small cafe outside the market, and the sudden quiet felt like a luxury. I think I disliked it because I crave quietVerbo preciso y natural, but I can see why so many people are drawn to a place that is so full of energy.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices de tiempo verbal de Band 6 (“a very crowded place I go to last December”, “we can not walk fast”) son correctos en Band 7 (“a really crowded place I went to last December”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
  • Band 6 se apoya en “some nice clothes” y “good price”; Band 7 usa “shuffle along”; Band 8 añade “let the crowd carry us along” y “I crave quiet”.
  • Band 6 cierra con un simple “it is full of life”; Band 7 termina con “a market that’s so full of energy”; Band 8 llega a la misma idea con “drawn to a place that is so full of energy” después de un equilibrado “That said”.

  1. Why do so many people enjoy being in a crowd, for example at a festival or a match?¿Por qué a tanta gente le gusta estar entre una multitud, por ejemplo en un festival o en un partido?
  2. Is noise in big cities a serious problem for the people who live there?¿Es el ruido de las grandes ciudades un problema serio para quienes viven en ellas?
  3. What can a city do to reduce noise in its busiest areas?¿Qué puede hacer una ciudad para reducir el ruido en sus zonas más transitadas?
  4. Do you think people cope with crowded places better when they are young?¿Crees que las personas se desenvuelven mejor en lugares concurridos cuando son jóvenes?
  5. How should the authorities keep large crowds safe at public events?¿Cómo deberían las autoridades mantener seguras a las grandes multitudes en los eventos públicos?

Preguntas frecuentes
