  • when and why: last May, half past three, sunrise from a ridge near Chimgan, my brother’s idea
  • what: two alarms, sandwiches and tea, climb in the dark, an hour on the ridge
  • who: brother Bobur, a friend with a car
  • worth it: tired all afternoon, but an unforgettable view, would do it again

Band 7

I’d like to talk about a morning last May when I got up at half past three to watch the sunrise from a ridge near Chimgan, in the mountains outside Tashkent. It was my younger brother Bobur’s idea. He’d talked about it for weeks, until I finally agreed, although I’m not a morning person at all. We set two alarms, packed sandwiches and a flask of tea, and a friend with a car picked us up at four. It was pitch dark and bitterly coldDescripción precisa y vívida when we started the climb, and for the first half hour I regretted saying yes. But when we reached the ridge, the sky was turning orange behind the peaksPast Continuous usado para situar la escena, and the valley below was still full of mist. We sat there for almost an hour, hardly speaking. On the way down we had breakfast in a small tea house, and Bobur kept reminding me that he’d been right all along. Looking back, I think it was completely worth itMarcador discursivo reflexivo que responde a la línea “and explain”: I was tireError de forma de la palabra: debería ser “tired” all afternoon, but I’d seen something I’d never have seen from my bed, and I’d gladly do it again.

Band 8

I’d like to talk about a morning last May when I got up at half past three to watch the sunrise from a ridge near Chimgan, in the mountains outside Tashkent. It was my younger brother Bobur’s idea. He’d seen photographs of the view and had talked about it for weeks, until I finally agreed, although I’m definitely not a morning person. We set two alarms, packed sandwiches and a flask of tea, and a friend with a car picked us up at four. It was pitch dark and bitterly cold when we started the climb, and for the first half hour I honestly regretted saying yes. But when we reached the ridge, the sky was turning orange behind the peaks and the valley below was still full of mist. We sat there for almost an hour, hardly speaking. On the way down we had breakfast in a small tea house, and Bobur kept reminding me that he’d been right all along. Looking back, it was absolutely worth itApertura reflexiva que responde directamente a la línea “and explain”: I was tired all afternoon, but I’d seen something I’d never have seen from my bed, and I’d happily do it again, preferably with a thicker jacketHumor ligero y registro natural.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices de tiempo verbal de Band 6 (“I get up”, “he talk”, “the sky become”) se corrigen en Band 7, que usa “He’d talked” y “was turning”, y Band 8 queda limpio.

  • Olvidar responder “whether it was worth it”, que es la línea “and explain”.
  • Usar solo “very early” y “very tired” en lugar de palabras precisas como “pitch dark” o “half past three”.

  1. Why do some people prefer mornings while others work better in the evening?¿Por qué algunas personas prefieren las mañanas mientras que otras rinden mejor por la noche?
  2. Should schools and offices start later in the day?¿Deberían las escuelas y las oficinas empezar más tarde?
  3. Do you think people who get up early achieve more?¿Crees que las personas que se levantan temprano logran más?
  4. How does the amount of sleep affect people's health and concentration?¿Cómo afecta la cantidad de sueño a la salud y a la concentración de las personas?
  5. Is it harder for teenagers than for adults to keep a regular sleep routine?¿Es más difícil para los adolescentes que para los adultos mantener una rutina de sueño regular?

Preguntas frecuentes

Mantén la opinión de la línea “and explain” en presente, por ejemplo “I think it was worth it” o “I'd happily do it again”.
