  • who, where: my friend Ploy organised it, riverside restaurant in Chiang Mai

  • talked about: school days, funny memories, plans after the exams
  • why enjoyable: stress gone, phones away, laughed until closing time

Band 7

I’d like to describe an evening I had with my friends after our final exams last year. My friend Ploy organised it, and she chose a restaurant right next to the riverPast Simple con una frase preposicional precisa in Chiang Mai. There were six of us, and we were all exhausted from studying, so everybody was desperate to unwindExpresión precisa para una necesidad fuerte. For dinner we had grilled fish, papaya salad and sticky rice, and the food was absolutely mouth-wateringAdjetivo vívido y preciso. Ploy also surprised us with a small cake, because one of our friends had just got a place at university, and somebody at the next table played a guitar and the whole restaurant clapped. I think the evening was so enjoyable for two reasons. Firstly, the exams were over, so we felt more relaxed than usual. Secondly, I hadn’t seen some of my friends since agesError de preposición: debería ser “for ages”, and it was lovely to laugh together again. We stayed until the restaurant closed, we took one photo together on the way out, and I went home feeling really happy.

Band 8

I’d like to describe an evening I had with my friends after our final exams last year. My friend Ploy organised it and chose a restaurant right next to the river in Chiang Mai. There were six of us, and we were all exhausted from studying, so everybody was desperate to unwind. For dinner we had grilled fish, papaya salad and sticky rice, and the food was absolutely mouth-watering. We drank iced tea and lime soda, since nobody was in the mood for anything strong. After the meal we talked for hours, reminiscing about our school days and laughing at the things our teachers used to doConstrucción de participio combinada con “used to”, correcta. We also talked about our plans, such as which university we’d go to. What struck me wasMarcador discursivo natural que introduce una reflexión that I didn’t check my phone once, and neither did anyone else, which is almost unheard of for us. Ploy also surprised us with a small cake, because one of our friends had just got a place at university, and somebody at the next table played a guitar and the whole restaurant clapped. If you’d asked me beforehand, I’d have called it just another dinnerTercer condicional usado con precisión, but it turned out to be one of the best nights of that year. There were two reasons. For one thing, the pressure of the exams had lifted, so we were more relaxed than usual. For another, I hadn’t seen some of my friends for ages, and it felt wonderful to be properly together againFormulación natural y cálida para reencontrarse. We lost track of timeExpresión idiomática natural and stayed until the restaurant closed, we took one photo together on the way out, and I went home feeling lighter than I had in months.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices de concordancia y de tiempo verbal de Band 6 (“we was all very tired”, “she choose”) son correctos en Band 7 (“we were all exhausted”, “she chose”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
  • Band 6 se apoya en “very delicious” y “very rare”; Band 7 pasa a “mouth-watering” y “desperate to unwind”; Band 8 añade “almost unheard of for us” y “lost track of time”.
I went home feeling lighter than I had in months”.

  1. Why is it important for adults to spend time with their friends?¿Por qué es importante que los adultos pasen tiempo con sus amigos?
  2. Do you think friendships become harder to keep as people get older?¿Crees que las amistades se vuelven más difíciles de mantener a medida que la gente envejece?
  3. How has social media changed the way friends meet and keep in touch?¿Cómo han cambiado las redes sociales la forma en que los amigos se reúnen y se mantienen en contacto?
  4. Is it better to meet friends at home or in a public place?¿Es mejor reunirse con los amigos en casa o en un lugar público?
  5. Do people spend too much time on their phones when they are together?¿Crees que la gente pasa demasiado tiempo con el celular cuando está reunida?

Preguntas frecuentes

No necesariamente.
