| scratch the surface | ver o conocer solo una parte pequeña de algo | After five days I felt I had only scratched the surface. |
| unfinished business | algo que empezaste pero no terminaste | The cistern is my unfinished business with that city. |
| soak up the atmosphere | disfrutar con calma del ambiente de un lugar | We sat by the harbour and soaked up the atmosphere. |
| a vibrant mix | una combinación animada de cosas distintas | The streets are a vibrant mix of old and new. |
| run out of time | no tener tiempo suficiente para terminar | We ran out of time before we reached the islands. |
| steeped in history | lleno de historias antiguas e importantes | The whole district felt steeped in history. |
| long to go back | desear mucho volver | I still long to go back in autumn. |
- city and when: Istanbul, March 2023, with my cousin, five days
- what we did: Bosphorus ferry, Galata tower at dusk, street snacks
- what we missed: the underground cistern, the islands, no time
- why again: unfinished business, autumn, only scratched the surface
Band 6
I want to talk about Istanbul, a city I visited in March 2023 with my cousin Aziza. We stayed there for five days and we visitError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “visited” many places, but the thing I remember best is the ferry across the Bosphorus. We also went to the Galata area and climbed the tower in the evening, and we eatError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “ate” simit in the street almost every day. But there is one thing we did not see, the Basilica Cistern, because the queue was too long and our flight isError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “was” early the next morning. I also want seeFalta “to”: debería ser “want to see” the Princes’ Islands, which we erVacilación natural, muletilla leve did not have time for. So I would like to go back in autumn, when there are fewer people. The city is very interestingAdjetivo básico; limita el Lexical Resource and I think I only saw a small part of it, so I hope I can visit again one day, maybe with my family, because I think they would enjoy it as much as I did.
Band 7
I’d like to talk about Istanbul, which I visited in March 2023 with my cousin Aziza. We spent five days there and packed in a lot of sightseeing, but what I remember best is crossing the Bosphorus on the commuter ferry, with gulls following the boat and the skyline of old mosques sliding slowly pastLocución verbal vívida y precisa. We also wandered around the Galata district, climbed the tower at dusk and ate simit on the pavement almost every day, which became a small ritual for the two of us. There was one thing we missed, though: the Basilica Cistern, because the queue was far longer than we’d expectedEstructura comparativa con una expectativa previa and our flight left early the next morning. We also didn’t hadError de forma verbal: debería ser “didn’t have” time for the Princes’ Islands. That’s really why I’d like to go backConector que introduce la explicación, ideally in autumn, when the city is quieter. It feels steeped in historyColocación natural y precisa, and I came home with the impression that I’d only scratched the surface, so I’m already thinking about a second trip, and this time I’d keep a whole day for the islands and another one just for wandering without a plan.
Band 8
I’d like to talk about Istanbul, which I visited in March 2023 with my cousin Aziza, and which I’m hoping to see again within a couple of years. We spent five days there and packed in a great deal, yet what I remember best is simply crossing the Bosphorus on the commuter ferry, with gulls trailing the boat and the skyline of old mosques sliding slowly past. We wandered around the Galata district, climbed the tower at dusk and ate simit on the pavement more often than I’d care to admit, which became a small ritual for the two of us. What we somehow missed was the Basilica CisternOración hendida que da un énfasis natural, because the queue was far longer than we’d expected and our flight left early the next morning, and we ran out of time for the Princes’ Islands too. That unfinished business is a large part of why I’d like to return, ideally in autumn, when the city is quieter. It feels like a place where centuries are layered on top of one anotherExpresión idiomática y rica en imágenes, and I came home convinced that I’d only scratched the surface, so I’m already planning a second trip, with a whole day set aside for the islands and another for wandering without an itinerary.

- Is it better to see a few places properly or many places quickly on a trip?¿Es mejor conocer bien unos pocos lugares o muchos lugares rápidamente en un viaje?

Preguntas frecuentes
