  • what: out-of-town shopping mall near Izmir

  • what we did: waited, walked from shop to shop, food court
  • why boring: same shops, no windows, nothing to do unless shopping

Band 6

I would like to talk about a shopping mall outside Izmir, in Turkey, because it is the most boring place I have wentError en la forma del verbo: debería ser “have been” to. I goError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “went” there last winter with my cousin Selin, who wanted to buy a new coat. Inside, it was, erVacilación natural, muletilla leve, the same as every other mall: the same shops, the same music and no windows at all. The music was loud, but nobody looked happy, and the people walked slowly and said nothing. Selin tried on a lot of coats and I just sitError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “sat” on a bench and looked at my phone. I told her I wanted to go home, but she said she needed to compare a few more shops, so I waited again. After that we ate a burger in the food court, and then we walked from one shop to another for almost three hours. I think the place is boring because there is nothing to do there except buy thingsExpresión básica; limita el Lexical Resource, and when you do not want to buy anything, you just wait. Also, without windows, I could not know if it was day or night, and the afternoon felt very very longIntensificador básico repetido; limita el Lexical Resource. You knowMuletilla usada como marcador de vacilación, I prefer places with some life, like the old bazaar in the city centre, where have many small shops and people talkingError gramatical: debería ser “where there are many small shops”. In the end Selin was happy with her coat, but I was very tired.

Band 7

I’d like to talk about a shopping mall outside Izmir, in Turkey, because it’s honestly the most boring place I’ve ever been to. I went there last winter with my cousin Selin, who needed a new coat. The mall is large and quite new, but it’s far from the city centre, so we had to take two buses just to get there. Inside, it was exactly the same as every other mallComparación natural, clara y precisa: the same shops, the same music and no windows at all. The music was loud, yet nobody seemed to be enjoying it; people just wandered slowly from one window to the next. Selin tried on coat after coat while I sat on a bench scrolling through my phone. I told her I’d like to leave, but she wanted to compare a few more shops, so I waited again. Then we had a burger in the food court and walked from shop to shop for nearly three hours. What made it so dull, I think, is that there’s nothing to do there unless you’re prepared to buy somethingOración de tipo condicional usada con acierto, and if you aren’t, you simply kill timeColocación idiomática. Without any windows, I couldn’t tell what time was itError de orden de palabras: debería ser “what time it was”, and the afternoon seemed to drag on. I much prefer places with some life, like the old bazaar in the city centre, where there are small shops, people bargaining and the smell of coffee. In the end, Selin was delighted with her coat, but I came home exhausted, and that’s really why I remember itExpresión de enlace clara que redondea la respuesta.

Band 8

I’d like to talk about a shopping mall on the edge of Izmir, in Turkey, which is quite possibly the dullest place I’ve ever been to. I went there last winter with my cousin Selin, who needed a new coat. The mall is large and fairly new, but it’s so far from the city centre that we had to take two buses just to get there. Inside, it was indistinguishable from any other mallFraseo preciso y natural: the same chain shops, the same music and not a single window. The music was loud, yet nobody seemed to be enjoying it; shoppers simply wandered from one display to the next. Selin tried on coat after coat while I sat on a bench scrolling through my phone. When I suggested leaving, she wanted to compare a few more shops, so I resigned myself to another hour, and after a burger in the food court we drifted from shop to shop for nearly three hours. What made it so tedious, I think, is that there is simply nothing to do there unless you intend to shopOración compleja con una condición natural, so anyone who has no wish to buy anything ends up killing time. With no windows, I lost all sense of whether it was morning or evening, and the afternoon seemed to stretch on indefinitelyFraseo idiomático y vívido. I much prefer somewhere with a bit of life, like the old bazaar in the city centre, with its small shops, its bargaining and the smell of coffee. Selin went home delighted with her coat, while I came home drained, and what stayed with me was how soullessMarcador discursivo que introduce una idea final reflexiva a place can feel when it has been designed for only one purpose.

Qué hizo subir la banda

  • Los deslices con los verbos de Band 6 (“I go there”, “we must take”, “I just sit”) son correctos en Band 7 (“I went there”, “we had to take”, “I sat”) y se mantienen limpios en Band 8.
  • Band 6 se apoya en “buy things” y “very very long”; Band 7 usa “kill time”; Band 8 describe el centro comercial como “indistinguishable from any other mall” y la tarde como una que podía “stretch on indefinitely”.

  1. Why do some places feel lively while others feel dull?¿Por qué algunos lugares resultan animados y otros resultan monótonos?
  2. Do you think towns and cities should build more places for young people to spend their free time?¿Crees que los pueblos y las ciudades deberían construir más lugares donde los jóvenes pasen su tiempo libre?
  3. Is being bored always a bad thing, or can it be useful?¿Aburrirse es siempre algo malo, o puede ser útil?
  4. How have large shopping centres changed the way people spend their weekends?¿Cómo han cambiado los grandes centros comerciales la forma en que la gente pasa los fines de semana?
  5. Do people get bored more easily today than they did in the past?¿La gente se aburre con más facilidad hoy que en el pasado?

Preguntas frecuentes
