A subject I genuinely enjoyed at school was history, which I studied for about four years at secondary school under a teacher called Ms. Rasulova. She had a reputation for being strict but fair, and while a lot of students found her a little intimidating at first, I actually think that reputation was slightly unfair, because she was also one of the most engaging teachers I had. Lessons weren’t just about memorising dates, which is what I’d expected before I started the subject properly — instead, we did a lot of source analysis, looking at old documents and photographs and trying to work out what they actually told us, almost like detective work. There was also a term-long project where we researched the history of our own town, which involved interviewing an elderly relative, and that ended up being one of the most memorable pieces of schoolwork I ever did.
What made me enjoy it, more than anything, was that it never felt like passive memorisation the way some other subjects did. Ms. Rasulova had a real knack for bringing the subject to life, often connecting events from centuries ago to something happening in the news at the time, which made it feel relevant rather than distant. It’s genuinely because of her, I think, that I still pick up history books occasionally now, years after leaving school, which is more than I can say for most of the subjects I studied.
- 籠統地列出科目內容,例如「we learned about many things」,而不是說一個具體的回憶。
- 把「enjoyed」和「was good at」混為一談,會讓你的說理比較缺乏說服力。
- Do you think schools should let students choose more of their own subjects?
- How important is the teacher compared to the subject itself?
- Do you think what students enjoy at school changes as they get older?
- Should schools focus more on practical skills than academic subjects?
