Band 6
The skill I would like to talk about is swimming, which I only properly learned as an adult, at around twenty-four, after avoiding it for most of my life because of a mild fear of deep water. I started with weekly lessonError de artículo y plural: debería ser “weekly lessons” at a local pool, mostly about staying calm in the water before we even go to techniqueError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “went on to technique”, and then I slowly began practising alone once I feelError de tiempo verbal: debería ser “felt” confident enough to go without an instructor watching. Honestly, it was a very hardVocabulario básico; limita el Lexical Resource skill at first; I hit a plateau after about two months where I could float and kick well but I still panicked the moment I tried to combine breathing with a stroke. It took almost a full year before I could swim confidentAdjetivo en lugar de adverbio: debería ser “confidently” across a pool without stopping, which felt embarrassingAdjetivo en lugar de adverbio: debería ser “embarrassingly” slow compared to children who learnsError de concordancia sujeto-verbo: debería ser “learn” the same thing in weeks. But slowly but surely, it did eventually click, somewhere around month nine, when the coordination between breathing and movement suddenly stopped feeling like, erVacilación natural, muletilla leve, conscious effort. Once I properly learned it, I felt a strange mix of pride and regret — pride that I finally overcame something I had avoided for so long, but also regret that I didn’t push myself to learn it as a child, when it would come more natural to me.
Band 7
The skill I’d like to talk about is swimming, which I only properly learned as an adult, at around twenty-four, having avoided it for most of my life due to a mild fear of deep waterConstrucción de participio que cierra la oración. I started with weekly lessons at a local pool, mostly focused on just staying calm in the water before we even got to technique, and then I gradually began practising alone once I felt confident enough to go without an instructor watching. Honestly, it was a steep learning curveExpresión idiomática y precisa at first; I hit a plateau after about two months where I could float and kick reasonably well but still panicked the moment I tried combineDesliz menor: falta “to” antes del infinitivo breathing with strokes — or, well, tried to combine them, at leastAutocorrección natural a mitad de la oración. It took almost a full year altogether before I could swim confidently across a pool without stopping, which felt embarrassingly slow compared to children learning the same thing in a matter of weeksEstructura comparativa correcta, con el adverbio adecuado. But slowly but surelyColocación natural e idiomática, it did eventually click, somewhere around month nine, when the coordination between breathing and movement suddenly stopped feeling like any real conscious effort at all.
Band 8
The skill I’d like to talk about is swimming, which I only properly learned as an adult, at around twenty-four, having avoided it for most of my life owing to a mild fear of deep waterConstrucción de participio usada con fluidez. I began with weekly lessons at a local pool, focused initially on simply staying calm in the water before technique even entered the pictureParáfrasis idiomática y natural, and gradually started practising alone once I felt confident enough to go without an instructor watching. Honestly, it was a steep learning curve at firstMarcador discursivo natural que abre la reflexión; I hit a plateau around the two-month mark, able to float and kick reasonably well yet still panicking the instant I tried combining breathing with strokesCláusula reducida con coordinación compleja. It took nearly a full year before I could swim confidently across a pool without stopping — embarrassingly slow, I’ll admit, next to children picking up the same skillInciso idiomático y preciso, con autoconciencia in a matter of weeks. Slowly but surely, though, it eventually clicked, somewhere around month nine, when the coordination between breathing and movement simply stopped feeling like conscious effort. Once I’d properly mastered it, I felt a curious mix of pride and regret: pride at finally overcoming something I’d avoided for so long, but regret, too, that I hadn’t pushed myselfEstructura paralela equilibrada con Past Perfect to learn as a child, when it would doubtless have come far more naturally.
- Band 6 dice “a very hard skill”; Band 7 incorpora “a steep learning curve”; Band 8 conserva la expresión idiomática y la amplía con “before technique even entered the picture”.
- Band 6 tiene un verdadero desorden en los tiempos verbales (“before we even go to technique”); Band 7 corrige el tiempo verbal y muestra una autocorrección (“or, well, tried to combine them, at least”); Band 8 no tiene vacilaciones, solo una construcción de participio fluida (“having avoided it for most of my life owing to a mild fear of deep water”).
- Do people generally give up too quickly when learning new skills?¿La gente suele rendirse demasiado pronto al aprender habilidades nuevas?
- Is it better to learn a skill through formal lessons or by teaching yourself?¿Es mejor aprender una habilidad con clases formales o por tu cuenta?
- How does age affect a person's ability to learn a new skill?¿Cómo influye la edad en la capacidad de una persona para aprender una habilidad nueva?
- Should adults keep learning new skills throughout their lives?¿Deberían los adultos seguir aprendiendo habilidades nuevas durante toda la vida?
Preguntas frecuentes
