시험관은 “it’s very big”이나 “it’s beautiful”이라고만 말하지 않고 물리적인 대상을 정확하게 묘사할 수 있는지를 듣습니다.

시간 배분에서는 “what it looks like”에 충분한 시간을 쓰세요.

I’d like to talk about the Registan, a historic square with three large madrasahs in Samarkand, in Uzbekistan, which I visited a few years ago with my family. What immediately strikes you is the scale of it — the buildings tower over the open square in front of them, and the exterior is covered in this incredibly intricate blue and turquoise tilework that somehow still looks vivid despite being centuries old. Up close, the detail is honestly overwhelming; there are geometric patterns repeated across huge surfaces that must have taken enormous skill and time to complete, especially considering they were built without any of the modern tools or technology we’d use today. What makes it impressive to me isn’t only the visual side, though — it’s the fact that it’s withstood the test of time in a fairly harsh climate for hundreds of years and still looks, in most places, close to how it must have looked originally. I remember standing in the main square in the early evening, when the light hits the tilework at a certain angle, and it genuinely left a lasting impression on me, more than any modern building I’ve seen since. I think what impresses me most, if I’m honest, is imagining the level of planning and craftsmanship that went into something on that scale centuries before computer modelling or modern construction equipment existed — it’s hard not to feel a bit humbled standing in front of it.

  • 건물을 “it’s very big and tall” 같은 크기로만 묘사하고 모양, 재료, 디자인에 대한 세부 내용은 말하지 않는 것
  • “where it is located” 항목을 완전히 건너뛰고 바로 전반적인 묘사로 넘어가는 것

  1. Do you think modern buildings are as impressive as older, historic ones?
  2. Should cities preserve old buildings or replace them with modern ones?
  3. What makes a building's design successful, in your opinion?
  4. How important is architecture to a city's identity?
