এই কিউ কার্ডের উত্তর যেভাবে সাজাবেন

এই কিউ কার্ড (cue card) যাচাই করে, একটি বস্তুকে আবেগ বা সম্পর্কের অর্থের সঙ্গে জুড়তে পারেন কি না। “explain why it was special”-এর মূল কথা আসলে এটিই: ভালো উত্তর বস্তু, যিনি দিয়েছেন তিনি আর মুহূর্তটিকে তিনটি আলাদা তথ্য হিসেবে না রেখে একসঙ্গে জুড়ে দেয়। পরীক্ষকেরা খেয়াল করেন, পরীক্ষার্থী শুধু কী, কে ও কখন পরপর বলে না গিয়ে সেই যোগসূত্র স্বাভাবিকভাবে গড়তে পারেন কি না।

সবচেয়ে সহজ পথ হলো এমন উপহার, যা এমন কোনো নির্দিষ্ট মানুষ বা উপলক্ষের সঙ্গে জড়িত যা আপনার স্পষ্ট মনে আছে, জিনিসটি ছোট বা সাধারণ হলেও, যেমন একটি বই, হাতে লেখা চিঠি বা সাধারণ একটি গয়না। শুধু চমৎকার শোনায় বলে কিছু বেছে নেবেন না, যদি এর কোন বিষয়টি অর্থবহ ছিল তা ব্যাখ্যা করতে না পারেন; “and explain” লাইনে পৌঁছানোমাত্র সেই ফাঁক স্পষ্ট হয়ে যায়।

সময় ভাগ করার ক্ষেত্রে “what” ও “who” মোটামুটি সংক্ষেপে বলুন, “when you received it” অংশে একটু বেশি সময় দিন, যদি কোনো নির্দিষ্ট উপলক্ষ বা গল্প জড়িত থাকে, আর শেষের “why special” নির্দেশনায় সত্যিকারের গুরুত্ব দিন, কারণ সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক, ব্যক্তিগত ভাষা সাধারণত সেখানেই বেরিয়ে আসে।

out of the blue	হঠাৎ করে, আগে থেকে কিছু না জানিয়ে	It was completely out of the blue, which made it even nicer.
to go to great lengths (to do something)	কিছু অর্জনে অনেক চেষ্টা করা	She went to great lengths to find exactly the right one.
a token of appreciation	কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাতে দেওয়া ছোট উপহার	He gave it to me as a token of appreciation for helping him move.
hand-picked	যত্ন করে ও ব্যক্তিগতভাবে বেছে নেওয়া	It felt hand-picked rather than just grabbed off a shelf.
to treasure something	কোনো কিছুকে অনেক মূল্য দেওয়া	It’s something I still genuinely treasure.
a milestone (birthday/occasion)	গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মোড় বা ঘটনা, প্রায়ই বর্ষপূর্তি চিহ্নিত করে	She gave it to me for my eighteenth birthday, a bit of a milestone.

নিচের তিনটি নমুনা উত্তর হুবহু একই গল্প বলে; শুধু ভাষা বদলায়। চিহ্নিত কোনো শব্দগুচ্ছের ওপর কার্সর রাখুন বা ট্যাপ করুন, তাহলে দেখবেন পরীক্ষক সেখানে কী লক্ষ করবেন। প্রতিটি ব্যান্ডের উত্তর সাধারণত কেমন শোনায়, এগুলো তার উদাহরণ হিসেবে পড়ুন, মুখস্থ করার জন্য নয়।

I would like to talk about a wristwatch my grandfather give to me, which was actually his own watch that he wear for most of his adult life. He gave it to me on my eighteenth birthday, which was, er, quite a big occasion, but what made it special is he didn’t just give it to me casually — he sit down with me before and explain where he bought it, many years ago, and some stories I never heard before, even though I know him my whole life. It is not a very expensive watch, and if I am honest, it doesn’t keep perfect time anymore, but the sentimental value is more important than that for me. What make it special to me is not really the object but the fact it come with those stories, it feels less like receiving a thing and more like, you know, being given a small piece of family history that I must keep now. I don’t wear it every day, mainly because I am scare to damage it, but I wear it on occasions that feel important, which I think is my way to treat it like treasure and not just use it casually.

ব্যান্ড 6-এর “I am scare to damage it” (বিশেষণের ভুল) ব্যান্ড 7-এ হয় “out of fear of damaging it”, আর ব্যান্ড 8 একই ভাবনা রেখে আরও ভাবুক সুরে শেষ করে: “how deliberate the gesture was”।

সচরাচর জিজ্ঞাসা

উপহারটি কি এমন কিছু হতে হবে, যা আমার কাছে এখনো আছে?

না। যে উপহার আর আপনার কাছে নেই, যেমন যা ভেঙে গেছে, হারিয়ে গেছে বা অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে দিয়েছেন, তা নিয়েও বলতে পারেন, যদি সেটি এখনো পরিষ্কারভাবে বর্ণনা করতে পারেন এবং ব্যাখ্যা করতে পারেন সেটি তখন কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল বা এখনো কেন আছে।

উপহারটি কি সস্তা বা সাধারণ কিছু হতে পারে?

হ্যাঁ, আর প্রায়ই ব্যয়বহুল উপহারের চেয়ে সেটি আরও জোরালো উত্তর হয়। কারণ কেবল দামি কোনো জিনিসের মূল্যের চেয়ে ছোট, ভেবেচিন্তে দেওয়া জিনিসের আবেগগত বা প্রতীকী মূল্য বিশ্বাসযোগ্যভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করা সাধারণত সহজ।

উপহারটি এত আগে পেয়েছিলাম যে অনেক খুঁটিনাটি মনে নেই, তাহলে কী করব?
