I’d like to talk about the Ichan Qala, the old walled inner city of Khiva, in Uzbekistan, which I visited during a family trip about three years ago. Historically, the place matters because it was once a major stop on trade routes connecting different regions, and much of what stands today dates back several centuries, making it one of the more completely preserved examples of that architectural style still standing. It’s also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which reflects how significant it’s considered beyond just local history. The whole visit left a lasting impression on me, mainly because it was the first time history had felt genuinely tangible rather than something confined to a textbook.
